Last June I bought all new hardware for the servers, new vm server, all new storage, spent 2 weeks copying data, then a final push to jump off the old system and onto the new. The new server is a single Dell T7810 with 2x E5-2698A CPU's, 256gb ram, 4x4tb NVME's and 3x20tb HDD's. It sucks about 250-300w, compared to the old multi node storage servers and blade servers sucking about 3500w. What a difference. And now, after ~8 years, I'm taking it apart, and I'll be pulling the smart data on all the drives, then selling anything salvageable off to the highest bidder. And I'll be posting some pictures here. What looks like a combination of concrete dust, drywall dust, and cat hair has basically filled the drives. |

I am really curious how close to death these drives were. The SSD's are enterprise grade, but the spinners were not. |

12 of the Samsung SM843T enterprise ssd's have 100% of drive life left after 7 years 6 of the Samsungs have 97-99% drive lift left. These drives were for VHD storage in 6 disk raid5 array's. They housed all the vm servers, game servers, sql servers, and web servers. They were running, and being accessed, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The worst drive: |
