So I have been having some trouble with the FFXI HD Overhaul. I downloaded it and replaced the files as explained in his videos, but I keep getting this weird flicker/movement on my screen. Below is a short video of what is happening. I don't know how to fix this issue.

Like the background is moving and it just doesn't look good at all in game.

Sorry about the crappy video quality. Had to download OBS and haven't messed with any setting.

May need to adjust mip map level in the registry? Or perhaps draw distance? Hard to tell from those clips on the phone.

The mip map setting in the ffxi confg only toggles between 0/1, but you can set it higher in the registry. As the value goes up, the details in the background will soften a bit and then clearly drop to a lower res version. If you go too high though, you get muddy textures. So most don't like it higher than 5 or 6.

If you stand at one end of the Bastok mines courtyard and look across (like at the OP warp NPC, look across towards mines), you may see a lot of shimmering on the ground when you pan the camera. This is a good way to test the different values to find a tolerable balance between quality and eye fatigue. Unfortunately, you need to shutdown/reload for a new value to apply.

Super sampling helps mitigate it too, so if you have the hardware to do that you can strike a really nice balance in quality... but anything over 1.5x background to foreground can really strain a less robust machine, so be mindful of that if your frame rates are already unstable.

If it is a lot of pop-in you can adjust draw distance to a higher value. This will apply in real time, so you can just walk forward/back to see how it affects cliff facings/trees/etc. Be mindful though that this will risk an impact to frame rates as you consume more resources keeping the higher quality textures on screen at the longer distances.

Thank you I will look into it, not the most knowledgeable about computers. Do you have discord I could message you just in case I have a question?

It's definitely mip mapping. But even enabling it in FFXI config won't do nearly anything.

Top is OFF, bottom is ON, but FFXI's "on" is painfully weak, but setting it further can cause OTHER issues like blurry nameplates.

To change your mip mapping level:

1. Go to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\PlayNasomiUS\SquareEnix\FinalFantasyXI
2. Edit the value for key 0000
3. 0 means off, 1 means on (in FFXI config). You can go higher than 1.

Higher resolution textures + 0 mip mapping = textures "move" and look incredibly ugly. How the people who use the HD overhaul not notice this, I have no idea.

Haven't gone that far yet. Still working on getting old LS mates into the game. Getting older sucks... seems like I am the only one with time and resources to play games anymore. Everyone got married, had kids and/or are putting kids through college... real life just gets in the way sometimes.

The older guides for retail still apply, so you can basically follow them. Just have to be mindful some of the paths to files or settings may change the names. So you would look for Nasomi instead of Square Enix, Ashita instead of Windower, etc.

Here is a link to one of the original wiki's about FFXI registry tweaking for graphics that may help guide you through some of it. Note that if your launcher profiles have numbers listed for the resolutions, they will override the registry keys-- setting -1 in the profiles will tell it to use the registry keys.

Would there be a reason why I would have to mess with any of the registry while most others didn't have to?

It's not that "most others didn't have to", it's that "most others can't tell the difference because they are horribly confused as to how the game should actually look and think the extreme UGLY GRAININESS is normal".

Ok thanks Nab, that grainy look hurts my eyes, have no clue how people can stand it lol.

I've even had people tell me that turning it on makes the game look "blurry" and "low quality". Some people are just blind!
