For fun I was thinking about building an "era" FFXI PC and I thought it would be interesting to get people's input on what would be the best graphics card, cpu, ram etc for that. It doesn't have to be best of 2001/2002, maybe the best Directx 8.1 card ever, for example. If you could build your dream rig from say 2004, what would it be? I'm also curious what people used to play on. My first PC I ever bought with my own money was an HP that had a Pentium 4, 2.4 ghz with hyperthreading. It came with a low end Nvidia graphics card that I later upgraded to an Radeon 9600XT. I've been an ATI fanboy ever since. |

I have a Dell Dimension 4500, P4 3.06GHz, 2GB, Barracuda 160GB, Windows 98 + Windows XP. This is my backup rig the kids use |

The concept of an era PC is lost on me. Is there some fundamental reason you'd want an older system (DirectX compatibility or something?)? A modern smart phone blows away a $3,000 PC from 2004, if only there were some way to get FFXI to play on Android OS. |
