"Toons" didn't seem like a term commonly used in FFXI from my experience until WoW became a thing. And since WoW is the natural enemy of FFXI, I hated the term along with the game that supposedly bore it.

Now, I have no clue where the term actually started, but that was my personal perception with the limited online gaming I did at the time.

Sure, it's personal preference and all, but let's not use the word toon. It just sounds un-classy.

People who call characters toons...
I have so many feel, much anger.

I feel that the idea of calling a character a toon is a sign of a change in attitude towards online avatars. When I first began playing FFXI and heck even started role-playing back in the All Creatures Tavern in AOL chatrooms (whenever a dern space would open up), I feel like people cared more about their characters either because you only needed one (as in FFXI) or you personally created it (your character you role played as in chatrooms). We called our characters characters because they were OUR characters.

Enter WoW, in WoW you could play multiple characters and actually if you wanted to experience different classes you HAD to play multiple characters. Out of necessity, I would postulate that characters became less important because you could make however many of them you wanted. Hence the term toon, an unarguably crass and demeaning term, came into existence.

It's a big red flag that makes me suspicious of how our interpersonal relationship in the game is going to work out.

Hate the term personally but never thought about it enough for me to notice too much. Haha.

I don't begrudge people for it, but I don't like the term. Then again, I've always viewed my characters as an extension of my self.
