How do you decide when to use a Great Axe vs dual wielding Axes?

I always thought dual Axe was the highest DPS potential but I've seen a lot of wars using GAxe even with /NIN so I'm wondering if I'm doing it wrong.

I've noticed very good results with Great Axe when well-geared using WS like Sturmwind early on. I'm not sure how things compared precisely later on, but you do have to consider that we play with the 2-handed weapon buff, where 1 DEX equals 1 Acc.

Gaxe is a top weapon for a 75 warrior. Lower level it'll depend, eg: thf low level kills with sword over dagger, but top end you'll find yourself back at dagger. Correct if wrong war veterans, but I believe this is most accurate.

Oh. That's actually huge. I thought it was more like 2:1 or 1.5:1. That also explains why I didn't notice GAxe pulling ahead since I've only been fighting Tough and lower mobs.

I guess I'll have to catch up on GAxe skill again.

It's 4 DEX for 3 acc for 2-handed weapons, and 2 DEX for 1 acc for the 1-handed.

I just started on Nasomi, and while leveling WAR my Axe skill is capping well before Sword skill. Is this a known issue?

(Semi related if Axe is supposed to be A- and Sword is B...)

I've found Great Axes to be a clear winner while leveling simply due to the fact that Shield Break/Armor Break are two of the best weapon skills until the 50s. Opening every fight with -40 evasion or -25% defense is stupidly good, plus you can use those to counter - or in some cases prevent - Evasion/Defense buffs that mobs will put up. Sturmwind's damage will eventually outstrip the group contribution that Shield/Armor Break bring as mobs get closer to the VT threshold.

Try taking your weapon off and reequipping it.
