For what it's worth, I've seen argus pop twice in the last month and easily got claim both times. I've also gone afk many times at argus and seen him claimed and killed in the chat log. Here's where it gets interesting, every time I have seen him killed by one of them in the chat log its always seconds after argus casts blaze spikes. Which is the only thing in the chat log since nothing else in the room ever does anything that creates a line in the chat log or makes any noise except to walk around. So my theory is that he doesn't actually bot but has a sophisticated way to always access his characters and also be alerted every time something happens that would only happen if argus was up. He could also easily be botting though. So who knows.
