As the other thread was locked due to going off the original topic (which was to screw over new players via currency exchange) maybe a thread should be started where we straight up discuss one players special access to and abuse of information on this server. It seems very strange and unfair to me that one player is routinely gifted advance information about coding changes and then has a free hand to exploit said information in the way of buying up items prior to the changes to sell at a higher rate later (PCCs, strider boots) or in some cases is allowed to change mob behavior himself to make goals more difficult for other players after having attained them on his own character (dynamis zones, sky mobs, etc) This is an issue that has been plaguing endgame on this server for well over a year and merits a public discussion. Locking threads does not change the fact that this behavior is a routine and has been for a very very long time. If this ongoing problem for every person at endgame save one is going to continue it would be nice at the very least to have an explanation as to why one player above all others receives extraordinarily special treatment. |

Honestly the real problem here is that if you are going to be doing code work on a server, you should absolutely, under no circumstances be allowed to play on it. Period. Ever. Not even for funsies. Shit, you shoudln't even be allowed to interact with the community. There is a reason that 99% of developers and GMs in other games are only shadowy observers. You guys can go on about all the shit Deadwing has done in the past, but the real issue is that he is even allowed to play here at all, and it has nothing to do with anything uncouth that he may or may not have done. It will literally always come back to this, and really no actual discussion should be had that branches off beyond this inherent initial mistake. |

This would make sense for a new game, or if he was developing completely new content. All he is doing here though, is polishing things to a retail standard. The mechanics to which he works, and the strategies in which are required in order to tackle said content are all readily available across FFXI forums. So with that being said, it's not like he's making content harder and keeping strategies and things secretly to himself, it's being made to what you would expect. Sure, he'll probably know exactly when these changes are coming in/have come into play, but for that you can blame Nasomi for not providing detailed patch notes or future patch notes. |

Quote: I thought you rage quit and then got put in jail for harassment after the gilpocolypse? Um, no? I never harassed anyone. Well except maybe Conqueror haha, but come on who wouldn't? Quote: It will literally always come back to this, and really no actual discussion should be had that branches off beyond this inherent initial mistake. This is a fair-minded point, and you're right. That it seems personal to Deadwing himself is only because he's the only player on the server that experiences this bizarre special treatment, at least that the server is aware of. The list of offenses (that are very real and we all know it, especially members of Alpha) only serve as evidence that this is a bad idea all around. I don't even dislike or blame the guy. Speaking for myself I know it would be hard to not give myself absurdly cheap mob kills or easy mode craft skills were that an option. It would be as difficult as not using a cheat on GTAV or something when the mission is pissing me off. So I get it. The difference is that when I use a cheat in GTAV I don't then turn around and disable that cheat for anyone else that wants to play the game. It's not the exploitation of information that is so concerning. People have and will be exploiting on this game forever, that part of the Nasomi experience is still dead on as compared to retail, lol. The core issue is that with the power to change the server once something is accomplished it is actively adjusted to a higher difficulty setting for everyone that comes after. This is an obvious habit as we've got now four or five extremely clear cases of it happening. I mean we have quotes with this person saying he did it on purpose and will gladly do it again. I'm just not sure why it's allowed and seemingly encouraged. This has been an exceedingly well known issue among all endgame players on this server for a very very long time. I'm just curious to know the logic here. Nas always has his reasons and sometimes they are very confusing to a lot of us as players. Honestly DW should enjoy these threads, they're great recruitment tools for Alpha. There is only one shell on this server led by a coder that gets to change mobs to his own personal ends. Except that is exactly the behavior we see repeated over and over. Make it retail standard only after someone is finished with it on easy mode. You can't see this as being hugely unjust to the rest of the population? I don't even... |

Quote: protection against authority Well, to be fair that isn't entirely true. Btag got banned (with 3 JoL pops on him, good job guys) and Xephious/Central were recently banned for creating kclubs out of thin air and they were all high tier Alpha members. |

Post subject: | Re: Let's Talk About Deadwing |
This thread is a witch hunt, plain and simple. First and foremost, deadwing has no advance knowledge of anything aside from code contributions he himself submits to me. There is also no guarantee to him that anything he does will be accepted. Also he has no idea when things he gives to me will be implemented. Second, his timeline for when he does content vs when he submits a change is no different from anyone elses. Say both player X and player Y do something. Then player Y submits a fix for it to make it better. By your logic, player Y is the bad guy, even though he spent countless hours to fix a problem, while player X is fine, even though he contributed nothing. Thirdly, no one is above the rules, and I have never looked the other way for anything. If a player breaks the rules, they will be punished accordingly. There is no favoritism. While I may not catch 100% of players that break the rules 100% of the time, I find enough that there should be a very real deterrent from breaking the rules that I've put in place. Player deadwing has worked hundreds of hours and spent a great deal of effort to fix some things that weren't right. If you don't like it, don't play that content. The server is a work in progress, requiring both constant maintenance just to keep the lights on, as well as new features being added. He has worked to help make that happen, as anyone is able to do. You, on the other hand, have contributed nothing. Yet you're here trying to call someone out for trying to make it better. Code contributions are discouraged, as I want players focus to be on playing the game. There is no reward for any contribution at all other than something working better than it did before. However, if a player does see something wrong and wants it fixed before I get a chance to get to it, I will certainly look at what they are offering. That being said, this thread is now locked. |
