Hello all!

Old timey FFXI player, left sometime around 2009 (according to FFXIAH...)
Been looking through private servers (seems it's very rare that servers offer a base 1.0 x EXP rate), struggling to figure out exactly what is included in Nasomi! Please go easy on me if I'm being naïve!

The About us link on the main page tells me this much:

Welcome to Nasomi!

Nasomi is a free to play, non-official FFXI server based around the 2005 era of the game. We provide an old school style of play in the world of Vana'diel for players who want to re-live the nostalgia of 2005.

Server Info

Nasomi went live on July 28th, 2013. Since then it has progressively gained popularity among those who wish to play the game during it's peak era.

Nasomi is hosted on a multi-node cluster with 6 virutal environments, each containing ~50 individual zone servers. That means that every zone in the game has it's own server, which provides load balancing and stability. All player information is snapshotted every 30 minutes and backed up, with a rolling 6 months of back-up's.

You can view in real time the status of all servers here. All these servers combine make up the "world" of Nasomi.

However when browsing through the forums (whilst searching if Level Sync is included) I came across a few baffling comments:

The main reason he has had it blocked with was the xp exploit in a sense from lesser colb pt's getting xp to 75 to easy but that can be worked around in a sense. But i agree it should get unlocked so people can get there AF gear,BLU can final learn some of the best spells in the game from this error and so on.

I've taken COR to 58 in recent months, and it's a damned fun job. DD is eh, but ranged damage is through the roof. You'll be running around so much that you won't get much chance to DD anyway. Definitely not a job for the lazy, you're gonna be going 100% all the time. I do rolls, ranged damage, quick draw which is pretty much guaratee crazy damage, and pulling, toss in a ws, keep auto attack up in case i get to swing something. Between shihei and bullets, it can get expensive though.

Okay, I'm gonna rant a little. The new sync system is bad. real bad. It seems like every time I put a party together by the time we all get together the server population has gone up past what we can sync to. then we are screwed to either drop people or just disband altogether. Its super frustrating. Are there any plans on updating it or revamping it?

I'm aware that both the expansion and Level Sync were a few years in the future but it's suggested that they're both in this version.

What is actually included in Nasomi that differs from 2005 if anything at all?
... And what specifically about level sync is causing so much trouble for players?

Thanks!

Nasomi has some random content and features that were added much later than 2005 or even after ToAU (like /jump or the revamped fishing system), however the main focus for the content is up through CoP. There are Treasures of Aht Urghan jobs, quests, etc. available; but many endgame systems from that expansion's time are not available. The overwhelming majority of things up through CoP are, however.

Level sync is used often, but if you play during NA prime time, you'll be limited to a 10-15 level range most of the time.

Players want level sync with unlimited range so that they can sync from, say, 75, to 10. But instead, it's limited based on the number of players online at the time you sync. In the dead of night it can be as high as 40, and during primetime it's typically 10. When the population on the server was very low a long time ago, the sync range was unlimited - but it was reduced to 20 about a year ago. After it was reduced, people thought it was too small of a range, so he implemented a system that changed it based on pop, to help EU and JP players who play with less players.

Nasomi is going for the 2005 feel, not necessarily strictly 2005. It's more accurate to say it's intended to go through early 2007 (to the end of ToAU), but most of ToAU is not yet functional. In a way, you can treat it as a progression server. It wasn't too long ago that Sea in it's entirety was added finally. This stuff has to be programmed and packets reverse engineered from scratch!

Sounds like Nasomi is working very hard then and to keep a page updated on what features are enabled would need just as much work!

Okay, that clears it up very nicely! Makes sense why the level sync range was involved. I didn't realise that folks would even be willing to sync that far! From my experience, I remember only using sync about 3/4 levels above or below my party; any further a gap would likely be from playing with friends!

A lot of people want to EXP on demand and use optimal jobs for the best EXP/hr. When they can do that within 5 minutes, they get cranky.
