@Loch Skill-ups are random and unfortunately you're getting unlucky. Those "You lost your catch" messages are likely Moat Carp and you pretty much just have to tough it out for a few hours until you get to skill level 5-6. If you're completely out of gil, perhaps follow the first part of the guide a bit more closely and kill some crabs for meat to NPC, or do the easily repeatable quests in sandy for Bat Wings and Rabbit skins.

Thanks. I was mostly asking to find out if I was doing fishing wrong: i.e. fishing in the wrong place or if I needed to trek down to Selbina and register with the guild of something.

I've not yet found Ronfarue crabs so I've been focusing on rabbits, orcs, goblins, and bats (I got within sprinting distance of the gravestone for SanD'oria 1-2 last night before a triple gobbie link brought my Whm8/- self low. I'll be heading back to try again later on.

I'm not completely out of gil, I have around 500 on my person and some more potential in sales on the AH. I'm eager to get my subjob and want to have okay level 10-12 gear when I head to the dunes to relearn how parties work. I'm not sure what I'm taking to the dunes for my first job. I started on retail as a MNK and have a strong nostalgia for them, but i remember the slog of finding parties. I've been grabbing flint and batwings whenever I can and will keep doing that.

Thanks for the reply. Now that I know its been bum luck so far I'll keep trying. Eventually I'll hit a string of luck. Its like my healing magic skill, I don't think I saw my first skill up from healing until level 6 but now they're coming regularly (My staff skill isn't capped either and I haven't seen a skill up for days).

Well.. Yes. You do need to join the guild, and it's in Windy. Selbina is the best place to do lvl's 1-5, that I've found though.

Aw, that would be what I was doing wrong - its been so very long since I played FFXI retail that I couldn't remember if joining the guilds ever did anything more than give a free crystal (for crafting). I guess I'll need to find a way to windhurst on my Whm 8. I used to know the way from retail (I was a Hume monk from windhurst back then), I picked SanD this time around because I found myself spending alot of time in SanD in retail and thought it would be "easier." I've regretted that choice but not wanted to loose my (admittedly minimal) progress by re-rolling.

The crabs in Ronfaure are by the Knightwell lake towards the La Theine Plateau zoneline, Loch. Their meat NPCs for around 270g each.

You could legitimately re-roll in Windy and level back to level 8 faster than you could walk to Windy from Sandy, as a level 8, lol.

If you decide to go that route, I'll buy your fishing equipment back for you. /tell Wolffhardt tonight, if you're on.

I think I might then just so that I can bask in the glow of windhurst once again. I don't mind clawing my way back up, I don't currently have much, a couple classes at ~ 8, a little bit of gear - and from what I'm seeing here a steady diet of crawlers, Gobbies, and crabs would likely let me recoup that gear difference fast.

Thanks for the advice and help, in the long run that's worth a whole lot more than a little bit of gil. :)

If you intend to fish, Windy is a fine place to start. They also have an awesome starting LS that you can get, and get some real help from.

Sandy sucks.

When I was back on retail I started in Windy, my best in-game friend was from Bastok, and I spent alot of time in SanD because I didn't like looking at Bastok and didn't want to run all the way back to WinD when leveling alternate classes. I quite like SanD overall, but Windy is home.

Also since you are level 8, no reason to reroll, but you can turn that into your mule. So don't delete the char.

I just walked from Sandy to Windy yesterday, took about 2 1/2 hours with a stop in Bubu to deliver supplies. Did it at level 1 to avoid xp loss, died once in Bubu afk at the outpost from a Gob Butcher that wanders a bit too close for it to be safe. The aggro only gets really really hard to avoid in Sauromuge.

Carried this over from my original post so that it would be visible to new people without having to comb through 4 pages of the other thread.

Here is an easy way to make money that literally anyone can do. Kill crabs for their meat to NPC, (as was previously mentioned it vendors for around 270g and crabs are present in all 3 starting areas,) then kill some Goblin Fishers until they drop a Clothespole, (also available in all 3 starter areas.) You can also farm more meat to just buy the Clothespole (2k) if the goblins are being stingy. Then buy a stack or two of Little Worms from an NPC, (they are like 3g apiece, available in all 3 cities.) Fish up some Crayfish, (again available in all 3 starting areas,) until you hit 6 or 7 skill. Vendor all your Crayfish or wait for AH sales if you wish. Use the Crab Meat gil to buy some Insect Ball bait off the AH, (usually around 3k/stack.) Fish up Moat Carp to your heart's content, which can be done inside of all 3 starting cities. Congrats, you now have as much gil as you're willing to put the time in to fish up.

Stacks of Moat Carp sold in last 15 days as I write this: 3265 @ 3k a pop = 9,795,000g in Moat Carp sales in the past two weeks. You're welcome.

Also for the love of god, don't undercut ridiculously if you want this method to be sustainable for awhile. Your fish will sell you just need to have more patience than a five year old.

How many hours a day were you fishing? And I assume that's all you did, no xp, no quests or such.
