What kind of gil does fishing bring in? How high do you have to get to average 20k per hour for example?

There's a silly old quoted number of 70k, that's if you get lucky with mithril swords while fishing black soles.
Black sole fishing is usually 30-40k/hr.

If you go the inside the belly lottery route and get a lu shangs/ebisu, you'll average out (from my personal experience) about 100k/hr.
That said, you can end up making a small fortune in 2 hour intervals if you happen to get lucky and hit a sweet point with the RNG.

Outside of that, there's some fish that get bought sporadically that can sell well. If you manage to get a complete list of the guild point rotation (and I'm pretty sure it's just a rotation and isn't random), you could fish up the fish ahead of time and make a good amount on some of the harder to get to ones (I'm looking at you zebra eel).

Dumb Question... why does gil per hour go up with Ebisu? Are you no longer targeting black sole?

Inside the belly quest... you're trading in fish you catch for what's 'inside their belly'. Sometimes you get an elemental ore.

Is this a good place to mention that rhinochimera are easier to catch with a composite rod than a lu shangs/ebisu?
There's no line snapping mechanic on nasomi, which would have prevented the composite rod from being viable.

I just hit 95 fishing tonight, I average about 3 1/2 - 4 stacks (stack npc for 8400) of fish per hour and sometimes i catch a few swords sometimes none. This mythical 70k number, lol I'm no where near that. You fish up quite a bit of garbage fishing for soles in Qufim.

I've done two hour long fishing sessions where I kept track of gil earned so far:

I eventually want to find some average after 10 or so runs, then try in Sauromogue and compare to see which is better.

Just to add another variable you should consider keeping tabs on moon phase as well.
