This is just some background, if you wanna read the problem, skip to the next paragraph. So this problem haunted me for a while, I had a temporary fix back in April by using a vpn to get into the game and I had a fun time for a few weeks. Fast forward to last September and on a whim I tried FFXI and it worked, I didn't change any internet settings or anything with my router and I didn't even have a vpn running, it literally began working for no reason. Another program that I've had trouble with was Xlink Kai, basically a program that lets people play LAN games online, primarily used for Halo 2 and Socom 2. I played Socom 2 from about early November to mid December before I took a break. I came back a few days ago and it kept giving me the same error it did before it started working again. My stomach dropped and I checked to see if FFXI worked and sure enough, after selecting my character I got error 3001.

Basically the game was working, but after a few months it went back to giving me error 3001 after logging into my character. This is the most confusing thing for me, in all this time i never changed any settings, it literally stopped and started working again on it's own. I'm sure it has something to do with my ISP but I haven't contacted them at all and I don't know what they've done but it's incredibly frustrating. Has anyone else had a problem like this where it just randomly stops working?

Usually related to ports being blocked by an ISP. What kind of ISP is this? Normal one, or are you on a mobile one?

What zone does it say your character is in?

If your ISP blocks the ports, then you can't communicate over those ports with the zone servers. VPN doesn't go through those ports right away.
