I havent got the game running yet, but hopefully soon i will. rather, i havent got a working computer yet...

Anyway, Hello! Im looking forward to joining you all very soon. I never played much retail XI. Got a few jobs to 50 in 2008. tried coming back to retail last year and, as im sure youd all agree, found the game too diffetent, to overwhelming, and with much of the original thrill removed.

A few questions:

is DRG's call wyvern here the two-hour or a normal ja? (ive heard that changed at somepoint?)
Id really love to focus on WHM and DRG. DRG for solo field running, and WHM for parties. Any advice on initial job leveling (subs, tool jobs, etc)? If i take up WHM first, am i gonna have a heck of a time doing the subjob quest and job unlock quests?

Any and all advice is so appreciated, on this, or genetal starting tips!

#1 advice for lvling WHM is start as BLM. Get BLM to 18+, get your subjob, then go back and lvl WHM. This gives you access to some BLM nukes while you solo WHM to 14. Makes solo on WHM a little easier.

does BLM/--- not suck to solo as much as i think it would?

hi!

- WHM will be fine for your first to 30+. and having sneak/invis is always helpful.
- BLM will be easy to get to 37 for your WHM sub; it's pretty powerful here.
- as was mentioned before, Call Wyvern is the 20min JA, rather than the 2-hour it once was. DRG 2-hour here is Spirit Surge.

For your DRG subs, I would recommend WAR until 60 (if not 75) and SAM. I also recommend NIN for a sub too; I use /nin often myself.

/THF didn't used to be as viable a sub before, but it seems to be good now, so you may wanna look into that one too.

You should always start FFXI with blm 18 then WHM 37, so you can warp/teleport/sneak/invisible yourself... Also good to note here: (on nasomi) oils and powders don't work as good as casting the spell so low lvl melees trying to do missions/quests/collect-OutPost-warps end up needing a lot more oils and powders than usual.

so youve convinced me to start BLM. Ive got no experience with BLM, how does soloing the initial levels go? poison, blind, and then water spam? worms move in this game, ya? so is timing my casting between enemy attacks my make-or-break? am i gonna be meleeing with my staff much or do i focus on casting?

lol you're over thinking it, just smash stuff with your staff and get the exp rolling. I highly recommend soloing to 12 here then moving to dunes as opposed to retail when everyone went at 10.

Just as a bench mark I solo jobs 1-10 in about 55mins if melee class. Probably an extra 20-30 mins if mage so don't waste all day planning out your E. Ronfaure strategies lol.

The main key to soloing at begin is focusing on Easy Prey mobs so you don't take much dmg and don't need to rest. Each level you gain you get full HP/MP so you can keep rolling continuous exp without resting.

When you do go to the dunes make sure you have: Willow wand(+1) +2(3) INT ::: 2x Eremite's rings +2 INT ::: Royal Footman's Cloak +1 INT ::: Melon pies +4INT
