Hello!
FFXI was my first MMO, and despite all the MMO'ing I've done since then (currently engrossed with FF14), none of them have quite been able to capture what FFXI did for me. I always loved how the slow combat created for a more tactical experience as well as for a more social one. I loved the mechanics of chaining pulls, skillchain and magic bursts, unique job/subjob party compositions, and all kinds of features that never really appeared in any other MMO. It was a messy experience for sure, but in the current days of everything being perfectly tuned and balanced, it made for a unique one. I never got super far, relatively. The highest level I ever got was a paladin/war to 30. I dabbled with DRK and SAM, but I don't think I ever got them past Quifim.
I've always wanted to try coming back but never felt like I wanted to forgo subbing to another MMO to go back to FFXI (I can only afford one at a time). I also wanted an experience more like the original, and with all the (albeit necessary) changes that have happened since then, it didn't seem like I'd be able to get that.
For some reason it struck me the other day to just google if there were any private FFXI servers, and to my delight I found this one. So I'm pretty excited!
I started a Hume MNK in San d'Oria named Sivil. I'm not yet sure what I want to play long term. I was considering going back to PLD as I love tanking. Either way, starting MNK always seemed like a solid idea because it really helps as a sub when leveling a bunch of other jobs. And also, solo MNK 1-12 I remember being an absolute breeze.
I just dinged 11 last night and I'm really looking forward to going back to the dunes once I hit 12 or 13. I've got barely any gil, the faintest of memories about how any of this game works, still rocking the Hume starting gear... and I love it.
Also, special shout-out to a Tarutaru named Taco that noticed I was hand-to-handing without a weapon. He took me to the weapon vendor, bought me a cesti, and sent me on my way. These are the kinds of random acts of kindness and interaction that most modern MMO's don't really have anymore.
See you all out there!
