Being a truck driver, I have to use a laptop. Its by no means a slouch, able to run Sonic Generations with minimal slowdown anywhere, but this looks like a nice space saving MMO for when I have a net connection.
One question: Is it possible to play in an offline mode or is it online 24/7. I'm cool either way.

It's online and persistent, most areas are shared, very minimal instancing.

As somoene new to FFXI I suggest you look up every item you find on ffxicylclopedia, a lot of them can be turned in for quests in your home town to give you fame (reputation)
