Character Name: Ignisfairgun
Played FFXI? Yes
Came from: Asura
Years Played: 2015-2018
How you found us? I was curious about what classic FFXI was like and stumbled on this while crawling through wikis
Other MMO's? I play FFXIV religiously, but I also play modern FFXI and MapleStory 2
Anything else? I am a super newcomer to classic FFXI so I am going to probably be really lost LOL, but I am glad I can join this community to be able to appreciate what FFXI was at its peak, and I look forward to seeing you all around! ^^

Well if you've played the modern version at least you're acquainted with the mechanics and stats and everything. I think the main thing you'll notice is that everything happens at a much slower pace and that you need to rely on people to get everything done. Getting xp is tougher and for most jobs requires a full 6-man party. Some of the smartest things to do right away are to level fishing enough that you can make a bit of money, and to use every crystal you farm for leveling crafts. Beeswax, leather, ingots, etc. are solid for skilling and making a bit of gil early on.

There's no homepoint warping, tomes, FOV, trust stuff, and xp bands only work on holidays when Nas feels like activating them. So don't be afraid to /shout for help in your starter city; usually, someone will eventually lend a hand. I'm based in Bastok, so if you're in the area you can feel free to send me a /tell.

Have fun!

Idk about using all your crystals for leveling crafts. Personally I would sell them to fund gear as you level. At least until you get to dunes and start partying there.

Yeah, I dunno. Most crystals are dirt cheap. I now NPC water and earth xtals if I can't synth them soon since stacks can sell for under 200g. I think it's waaaay more useful to lvl up alchemy to be able to do beeswax, smithing and GS for ingots, cooking for OJ/etc., leather for sheep leather, and so on.

Selling xtals for money is a crazy waste of a resource that took a relatively long time to earn and nets a tiny amount of gil. So when you can do something useful like lvling a craft instead of getting a pittance in gil, I think that's a way better cost/benefit result. I ended up making hundreds of thousands within the first month or two just by doing this, quests, and soloing a bunch of lowbie jobs to ~15.

After that, I had alchemy high enough that I could actually make steady money with that. I still keep most of the xtals I get and only sell them when inventory gets tight.

After a while, though, collecting stacks of clusters is way more economical, space-wise, so that's what I do except for things like dark xtals which are still at a premium.

Yeah, I've been trying to scrounge what little gil I can here in Windy for even the most basic gear lol. Do you have any tips in terms of priorities for gearing a lowbie WAR? Like in terms of good places to look for gear and what would be recommended to start partying in the Dunes.

Mainly, I'd recommend lvling WAR, WHM, BLM, THF, and maybe another one or two jobs up to at least 12 solo. I'd do 15. That'll net you a lot of items that you can use for repeatable quests (crawler calculus, yag necklaces), as well as things to sell on the AH (silk thread) and craft (beehive chips etc.). Plus a bunch of vendor trash.

That'll make sure your sub jobs are leveled when you get your sub and enter the dunes. And in leveling those jobs, you won't need decent gear since it's all done in lowbie areas. Buy weapons and armor from vendors when you need to since that's often the cheapest, but you can really get by being almost naked up to 15 is you're soloing casually. Level cooking with grilled hare or something. Make some animal glue (can't remember the level but I think it's low). But mostly, practice the jobs, perfect your macros, and have some fun.

oh, and go to N Gustaberg and camp the lowbie NM Maighdean Uaine for the optical earring. It's lvl 10, gives acc+1 att-2, and at low levels you can use all the acc+ you can get.
