Just starting out in Windhurst. It's pretty tough when you have no idea what is going on! I'm like "how do I open my map? are there quests I should be doing? Do I gotta train my weapon skills at a skill master? How do I scroll the text back up?!" Good times. I JUST got ganked by a gobby for the first time. Nice dynamics. Looks like it's gonna be a good experience. Nice to meet you all.

map: You can open the map in your menu (see http://nasomi.com/wiki/index.php?title= ... e#Controls) or typing /map
quests: not yet, no. FFXI isn't a quest-centric game, you do most of your playing without any active quest in mind.
weapon skills: nope. you skill those up all naturally by using them.
scroll the text back up: (for full keyboard) it's + on numpad (to target Chat box, btw, if you press it again, you can target your buffs) then press enter

welcome to FFXI!

I started with zero knowledge of the game too. There's a huge amout to learn, but there are also huge resources available : this site's WikiNas and forums (for instance this thread about earning Gil : viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4645), ffxiclopedia (ffxiclopedia.fandom.com), etc.

Remember that Goblin well. You'll get back to him and kick his ass in no time. Revenge is sweet.

Yeah, I'm learning now how much more I need to learn. I'm level 20 now. I'm trying to complete the subjob quest, but I failed to beat a bogy 4-5 times now. They always con "Incredibly Tough" but I always feel compelled to try anyway. I did do a /shout for help but no one responded.
I thought maybe I would come back and fight them once I finally bought that Longsword +1 and Warrior's Belt +1 so I've been constantly checking my delivery box. I put a full stack of squares of cotton cloth on the AH for 35,000. I've been waiting days for that finally sell. It hasn't sold yet and I FINALLY checked the AH to try and sell it at a lower price.... It's not there anymore...
I don't know where it went exactly, but I"m absolutely crushed...
At the very least, I could have sold those 12 for 1800 a piece to a vendor. But now they're gone. All my money that I had coming in is gone and I have to start all over. I need a new job!

A few points:

More often than not, you will not be able to fight and win against tough, very tough, and incredibly tough mobs on your own. Some jobs later on can do so, but definitely not a subless job at 20.

Good on you for buying +1s at your level, but you'll usually get more out of buying multiple pieces of gear than a couple +1s. Come back on your second job and stack up the +1s once you've got some gil in your purse.

Lastly, Nasomi's a bit different than retail. Some of these differences aren't directly explained or easy to see in the client. Most likely, the stack you put on the AH is still there, you just can't see it. The AH was originally designed to hold 7 items, but Nasomi's just got reduced from unlimited to 100. Of course, you can only see the 7 oldest items in your view log. Once you take a few more down, you can see some more. Luckily, if you want to check everything you have up, there is the possibility of looking in your account on this website and seeing everything you have on the AH all at once. Its a pretty nifty feature, not something we were fortunate to have so conveniently back in the ol' days.

I remember very well my fight against a bogy for that subjob item. I managed to defeat it with a bit of luck (it read "tough" however, not "very tough"), but ended the fight with precious few HP and MP left. I couldn't have won if it had read VT.

You'll get your revenge if you try again a few levels higher (24-25) :D

As to getting help rather than going solo, the chances are not so good within Buburimu because few players hang out there. They'll be better in Windurst, and even in the Recruitment section of the forum.

A few responses:

I'm not really sure how to highlight specific text to respond to, but I started out as a taru red mage. I got the bee spatha at 13 and I"ve been rockin that but I wanted to upgrade to a longsword. Unfortunately, the price had hiked up to 15k. The +1 version of it was only about 20k, so it seems easily reasonable to just get the +1 since I don't even know what the next upgrade is going to be or when. The warrior's belt would greatly offset the huge VIT and HP deficit of my taru self, but the +1 version of it also has more vit. Since I was coming in to the fortune of roughly 30k and I already had about 14k, I reckon I coulda pulled off BOTH of those items. Upgrading from that bee spatha and being that I currently don't wear a belt, (or most other equipment) that vit and hp would be really helpful. That's why I thought, if I managed to get a VT Bogy, I could pull him with silence and hit him with blind immediately. Doing this after using enthunder and blaze spikes, of course. Then hit him with slow and spend MOST of my mp trying to heal myself with cure 2. MAYBE I might get a little ballsy and try to cure him, but I don't think it's going to really be worth it. It MIGHT be more worth it to cast fire, but my elemental isn't very high. Either way, I'm gonna pull off some kind of taru magic, red mage style, on a VT bogy and get my subjob class stuff going. For the record, I leveled from 19 to 20 fighting "Incredibly Tough" damselflys in the mountains, so I thought it MIGHT be possible with a bogy (bogies are much stronger).

I'm REAAAAAAAAAALLY hoping what you'er saying it true about me not being able to see my stack. That's the best thing I've ever read! Now I can take it down and set it back on there for 32k instead of 35k. THEN, I'm gonna buy that stuff and go rock that bogy ^_^. Thanks for the help

Use the "quote" button below the post you want to quote.

You're a better fighter than I am :-)

I'm sure Two Pence is right on the money.

Yeah, you were totally right. I was able to get that stack off the auction house. I had enough money that I ended up just selling it all to a vendor and getting myself that longsword +1 and warrior's belt +1. Also, I DID get level 21, found a weaker bogy, and I beat him! I now have the subjob unlocked. Now I have my chocobo unlocked, subjob unlocked, and I'm not sure where to go from here, I guess start working on missions. Time to go take a look at the maze of shakira or whatever it's called.

Dude, VanWinkle, thanks for the help man. You've been a life saver!
