Hi everyone! I just started a Human Thief that I will eventually change to a Ranger and then a Corsair. That's my goal, at least. I played EQ for 7 years and I have to admit that I was sort of at a loss at the beginning on where to start. So, I began with the Missions and see that they are a bunch of running all over Fed Ex missions. Is this the way everyone else is starting out or is there some easier way of leveling that I haven't figured out yet? I'm just playing alone as my friends have no interest in this game. Just trying to get the lay of the land and figure out all the controls. Any hints or assistance to getting started would be appreciated. See ya around...

Xyyth: Level 2 Thief

Get outside the City walls and start battling the creatures you'll find there. Each win gives you experience points. Once you have enough Exp, you'll gain one level. Use the Check command on the Mob beforehand, to make sure the battle won't be too hard (look for Easy Preys, to start).

Thanks, man. So don't even worry about doing Missions? Do you know where the weapon vendor is?

There's one weapon merchant in each city. For instance, in windurst:
https://ffxiclopedia.fandom.com/wiki/Hohbiba-Mubiba

That Web site is an excellente resource, by the way.

And yes, you do missions too, but that's not where you'll gain levels, though I think some missions give Exp as a reward.

Have fun :D

Is it cheaper to buy items from a vendor or on the auction house? It seems really tough to accumulate much money in the beginning and people are wanting like 3000 or so for a weapon or a piece of armor. Seems really high.

Yep. Early on, making gil is a very slow process. But, as your level increases, you will fight higher level mobs that will drop items of higher value. Also, don't overlook crafts. They're another source of income.

It's always worth checking both the AH and NPCs. I'd say that, most of the time, AH prices are higher. Players are willing to pay a premium for the convenience of purchasing at the Auction House. I'm generally not willing to pay that premium. I'll admit I once travelled a very long way to save many thousands of gils on a scroll :o

I just made level 7 after killing a ton of bees, worms, and bats near Bastok. I'll look for you later because this seems way too slow...almost to the point I feel like I'm doing something wrong. lol

If you look at the quick links in upper right hand corner there's an online auction house. I use that when comparing to the NPC to see which is cheaper for gear when I'm playing at the earlier levels. Makes for a lot less running back and forth to compare prices. Also when you're vendoring crap that mobs drop, compare the price an NPC will pay compared to the auction house price items sell at. And lastly, compare the price of gear vs auction house, sometimes you can buy off npc and then relist it on the auction house for a nice profit. It may be only 100-200 gil, but it adds up and at early levels, that's quite a lot of gil.

Level 7 after a couple of hours fighting mobs as a Thief doesn't sound all that bad. As you've said in Main, the grind is real :D

I should be online around 8:30 P.M. EST, maybe earlier, if you don't find me I'll try to find you.
