I had asked in MogHouse ls, but got no response. Is there a merchant in any parts of San d'Oria that sells monk armor and weapons? The auction house doesn't appear to have any items or at least reasonable in prices to someone new. According to FFXI wiki there is a Coullave in Port San d'Oria that sells monk items, but she doesn't sell them atm on Nasomi (I'm new to FFXI in general, perhaps it's a conquest thing?). Do I have to travel to Bastok as a lvl 8 to gear up? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

for 500 gil you can travel to bastok via the Chocobo circuit. Talk to NPC outside the chocobo stables will let you pay 500 gil to enter. You then follow the track all the way around to the NPC's on the opposite side. talk to one to be moved up into the building. there is an npc to warp you to each of the 3 nations. the one that looks like maat is for warping to Sandoria. The Mithra is for warping to windurst. the last one is for warping to bastok. Sorry I don't know what that one looks like.
