As someone who played extensive endgame on retail way back when my honest opinion is that some people care more about denying other players from achieving accomplishments more so than they care about said accomplishments for themselves. These people get their joy from making sure you don't. Its sad but I believe its a normal part of the human condition. I've seen linkshells let rare items autosort to mules or to the ground rather than let an outsider have it for free or even for a discount. The hmn scene is a great example of just how petty humans can be.
