I think the main point is, he takes on the project solo and doesn't want help. We all enjoy the server but it does really suck when search goes down. We get he has a life but the server is truly crippled when search is down.

People need to chill on the back of Nas boat because its a free server. Its his project yes but he puts himself in the boat of doing it all himself. So we do have the right to have opinions of when shit breaks.

We love the server but its pretty unplayable when you can't buy anything or can't sync or can't do much when search is down. We just want some sort of resolution. It always seems to hit at the worst times.

Jeez, it's really rude that someone voluntarily maintains this huge project. not only without any compensation but also ends up getting scolded.

This is such a disingenuous position. Its not rude that people are presenting their primary concerns to the person maintaining the game. Search going down is becoming a bigger issue magnified by the fact that more people are beginning to regularly participate daily. It's much better if everyone has aligned priorities and goals and clearly at some level they are misaligned currently. Nas is just one person, you're right. People are contributing to his success by pointing him in the direction of the most imminent issues. An explicit choice to ignore that without even offering a temporary fix, is rude on his part. People already overlook the duct tape and rubber bands holding any private server together as is, and they are complaining about a feature that makes the core aspect of the game impossible to perform.

Being a volunteer in this regard does not absolve any party of criticism. People have come to rely on this server for their hobby, and weather or not its free or a labor of love is a moot point. I, and pretty much everyone else in this thread I'm sure, respects Nas's decision to abstain from continuing at any point in time. But if he is going to continue, then the criticism is perfectly okay too. While Nasomi may have the largest contribution among all of us, if we are a community then we have at least some equal say as a community because as you pointed out, we are just as free to leave. Clearly both parties gain something from this weather its enjoyment or other esoteric satisfaction, and while he is clearly an excellent human being, that doesn't make Nas infallible.

OK, let me rephrase - it's OK to express criticism, the problem is that the way some people express it is really rude. It's the people who actually expect nas to "work" for them that are annoying.

Regarding the way nas manages and develops the server - for better or worse it's his server therefore his decision. If I understand correctly when he just started he got burnt by several GMs, who used their knowledge of the server's inner working to their advantage over other players, and decided to never involve anyone else again. I don't know if and when this will change but the fact that he doesn't even trust Nabutso enough probably means it's not likely to change anytime soon.
Yeah, there are other private servers that work differently. The second biggest private server actually seems to accept third party contributions merely due to the fact that they are based on a recent version of DSP and tend to sync the code often. It means faster development but also more prone to cheating. Also, mind that even if they're the second biggest, their peak number of concurrently logged-in users is around 100 and you have to start over, for which reason I doubt that anyone will move to another server, maybe except a retail classic server if and when S-E decides to set one up.

I wasn’t suggesting you don’t appreciate it, but it sure as hell seems like he doesn’t. The AH being down, not being able to find party members easily even if you do mind not syncing, obviously the syncing.

It just makes it feel like the game is completely unplayable for newer players, and if it’s their first experience there’s a really good chance they don’t return.

How have you lived this long and are still this stupid?

Telling someone that spends countless hours on a volunteer project that they should direct their time towards things that actually determine if he feels like he is wasting his time or not, isn’t rude.

It’s called criticism, and it’s the only way the server can improve, grow, and evolve.

People give you a lot of crap for making pointlessly dumb and long winded posts a lot on here, and I’m just amazed at how much that seems to embolden you.

You're not wrong per say... but I do want to draw attention to your last point.

Yes, this is a free server, and yes, Nasomi is free to do as he pleases with his server. However, in the success of his server, Nasomi has essentially created a monopoly on the classic FFXI experience. There are only so many players to go around in this community and the majority are always going to want to play on the most populated server - meaning that so long as Nasomi exists, no other servers realistically will. It's one thing to say, "You're not paying for it so if you don't like it, just leave!", but where can we go? If you want the classic FFXI experience, Nasomi's server is really your only option.

There's nothing inherently bad about this, of course... Yes, there have been bumps along the way, but I think Nasomi has done a great job overall and most people (myself included), appreciate the hell out of what he has done and continues to do for this community.

But he didn't accomplish all this by working alone. This server is based off the DSP and there were a number of individuals helping him who no longer are, and with the population explosion lately, it just really seems like he's in over his head trying to fly solo on this.

Again, you're not wrong that he deserves the respect and appreciation of the players who are benefiting from his efforts free of cost, but that goes both ways. I doubt he ever planned on it, but Nasomi has become the de facto caretaker of the hobby of a lot of passionate people and he needs to realize this and step up to that responsibility. Maybe it's time he loosens his grip on the reigns a bit and accepts some of the help people are offering. I can't speak for everyone obviously, but I personally could live with a few people gaming the system again if it meant a better experience for the rest of us overall...

Just my opinion of course.

Well of course.
Let's face it - the population is currently not big enough for more than one server (though we're in the right direction). Examples like the Buburimu Peninsula being practically deserted pretty much prove it. Even on retail only two servers are decently populated. I don't know how Nas came to be the biggest private server but yeah, I don't think this will change very drastically anytime soon.
With that being said there can be some surprises - there are some servers that at least claim they have features that don't yet work on Nas (e.g. gardening, chocobo digging), so if there ever comes a point where there's a nearly perfect server with virtually everything implemented and hardly any bugs (and assuming for this purpose that it isn't Nas), will people want that even at the price of losing all progress? One can only guess.
Other than that, yeah, it's only if things happen here such as the population growing so big that a single server can't handle any further load or if Nas decides to move on for any reason.

Nas isn't going to be moving on nor can the server grow "too big". He's spent $40k on hardware alone and has run into massive issues with how dsp works given such a large server. Every single server starts off promising things that other servers don't have - then they take donations, have GMs, a 'team', and it all falls apart. Nas's best feature is the fact that, among all this doomsaying, as server rise and fall, he has been around - and never took donations, and removed drama, etc.

He gets shit on for "bad uptime" even though he's built a generator shed and got 0 sleep for 4 days in a row because he needed to refuel it after storms took out power to his whole house. Meanwhile other servers shut down permanently because they just didn't feel like it anymore. Servers that took people's money. That have now cost it's players hundreds of thousands of hours of playtime collectively. Nas doesn't do that and won't do that.

He'll accept help only once he really needs it. People had the same criticisms now as they did a year ago when we had 500 players: "How can nas handle them all? He NEEDS help NOW! Other servers do X so much better!". Most servers don't make it to the 1 year mark, let alone the 5.5 nas has, and building a server off of creating features that other servers don't have as your only selling point isn't going to end well for them. Never has. As far as help goes? That's up to him. He isn't going to see the server crash and burn out of stubbornness. The dudes not perfect but he knows what he's doing (it helps that I talk to him about it daily and get an insight into that though).

Stay tuned for the Q&A and you may understand better why things are the way they are, maybe why things were so slow this past year as far as nas's activity. This isn't normal for him, and yet he's still accomplished a lot.

$5 says the DoS attacks are being created by someone who wants to boost another private server. The threat is real.

Hahah

I’m not sure what’s more rude... player feedback or believing the person running the entire server is too fragile for someone to recommend not letting core features of the game crash for hours at a time, relatively frequently, while tons of new players are signing up.

Maybe I just think higher of Nas than Nightcoder does.

Remember Kupo? Their #1 advertising line was "working monster TP". I made a char there and died to a lv 1 mob that gained enough tp to kill me. Lv 1 mob. Lets not forget the golden "Nas is buggy because /sea rolls over at 255! It doesn't happen on MY server!" Yeah, because that server has never had enough people for that to happen.

Nas used to be flooded with complaints about how mob tp was broken here. It hasn't changed - and yet, the complaints stopped, because there was no longer a server who proclaimed nas to be broke.

Search crashed very rarely and sporadically as soon as 3 months ago. Now it's a daily occurrence. A server popped up about a month ago (remember the RMT bans?)... a server made up once again of players banned from nasomi. Go ahead and take a look at their forums or playerlist to see that. No doubt about it.

You'll all be happy to hear that nas took some time today to work on search crashes. He's made some changes that should prevent it from happening, and it's live already. He's hesitating to call it fixed yet, though.
