The game is about competition. Competition for NMs. Competition for camps. Competition for the AH.
If you no longer have to compete for anything, it becomes a solo game like retail, and that's when people /quit.
High level thieves farming lizzy is fine. It's one way to make gil.
The only thing I have to say about the topic is that monopolies and oligopolies are not competition. I think people who call this competition are looking for another word. If someone new cannot enter the market then competition does not exist.
Nasomi wishes to preserve laissez-faire (proper word to use), I do believe this is what would make people quit as you have described if it did not exist. An unregulated market means less work for Nasomi. I am sure he sees that as a good thing. It gives the obsessive compulsive something to do. Laissez-faire though also requires citizens to be swift in calling out those who would abuse the system. So this is also part of this philosophy Nasomi wishes to preserve, this is why he takes swift action against gil sellers. I suspect some of the people farming NM's are also involved in gil selling. This is where we should focus our attention on primarily.
Do you really think that camping LL or VE is that lucrative? Both pop like 18 times a day and drop at like 7% for LL and 15% for VE, thats like 500k/24hour day if you literally get every claim and don't sleep, uncontested buburmibu leeches are 35k/hr so you'd make almost twice as much just killing leeches without even needing to interact with the AH. Try actually thinking about assertions you make before claiming them, everyone who beats you isn't cheating.
Also, don't use words above your pay grade, an oligopoly would imply that all 10 people camping ll were chopping the gil from each drop, and a laissez-faire environment couldn't have rules that FFXI has on it, like the fact that you can't kill other campers etc, it is a standard competitive environment that you're butthurt that you keep losing at. You very obviously want equality of outcome because it happens to benefit you in the now, literally every thread you've posted is "make this overarching change that benefits me"
