You could become "new player rich" years ago when there were only 2 established Leathercrafters trying to provide Nomad Mantle+1s to the whole server. Now not so much. XD

Feeling like a thread like this is hurting gil-making potential more than helping. Everything i've been encouraged to do to make some gil has lost value.

There is even so many people fishing right now that moat carp has dropped substantially in price and overstocked on AH, while Fishing Rods have increased 30-40% in price. The trend here is obviously cause everyone and their mother will tell you to "GO FISH". Now, I had no interest in fishing so thought i'd find a place i can farm some stuff i can vendor thats worth my time to farm, and now at any time of day whether is 2pm or 2am, I have to compete with 3-6 people for 11 spawns making the gil/hour really not worth it.

Helping people get started is nice, but people need to find their way when they get to a level of being more self-sufficient.

Moat carp are holding steady at 3k a stack..... and fishing is great way to make gil, because after about 20 levels, you make gil by NPC'ng what you catch primarily, making it immune to market impact.

No matter what methods become popular, it causes other methods to become less popular or new methods to become viable. This thread just shined some light on more common avenues.

Well that's what Moat carps are for. You need 834 (rounded up) stacks of moat carps for Lu rod. Someone taking advantage of under cutting price causing a rebound is not all uncommon.

That's kind of how it'll work. Someone will decide to get Lu Shangs, and they'll buy hundreds of stacks at once. It fluctuates. If you catch moat carp, they'll sell. The beauty of fishing is that's a short term thing.

So quick question: I never learned to fish back on retail but I'm a cash strapped new player trying to outfit my class(s) for the dunes (and hopefully onward) so I've invested in a clothespole and some little worms. My problem so far is that I can't catch anything and because of that can't get skill ups.

I /fish and waith for the arrows to show up. I click them until the fish's "HP bar" is depleted and then try to reel it in. Everytime I get the message "You lost your catch due to lack of skill. I've tried fishing in the castle moat of N.SanD'oria and the river of E.Ronfarue. Only thing I've caught so far was an EP pugil (no skill up). I spent pretty much the last of my gil currently on the pole so I'm wondering what I should be doing to get the first few skill ups.

I feel like the obvious answer to "carp price decreasing, fishing rods going up in price" is to sell more fishing rods. Consequently people will look more at trying to repair rods, etc, leading to demand for other materials. Capitalism: useful for making money, who knew?

So...you're complaining that the things people told you to do to make gil aren't as effective for you, then suggesting that people need to be more self-sufficient? Sounds like you need to take your own advice and find something else to make money from then.

@Loch Skill-ups are random and unfortunately you're getting unlucky. Those "You lost your catch" messages are likely Moat Carp and you pretty much just have to tough it out for a few hours until you get to skill level 5-6. If you're completely out of gil, perhaps follow the first part of the guide a bit more closely and kill some crabs for meat to NPC, or do the easily repeatable quests in sandy for Bat Wings and Rabbit skins.

Thanks. I was mostly asking to find out if I was doing fishing wrong: i.e. fishing in the wrong place or if I needed to trek down to Selbina and register with the guild of something.

I've not yet found Ronfarue crabs so I've been focusing on rabbits, orcs, goblins, and bats (I got within sprinting distance of the gravestone for SanD'oria 1-2 last night before a triple gobbie link brought my Whm8/- self low. I'll be heading back to try again later on.

I'm not completely out of gil, I have around 500 on my person and some more potential in sales on the AH. I'm eager to get my subjob and want to have okay level 10-12 gear when I head to the dunes to relearn how parties work. I'm not sure what I'm taking to the dunes for my first job. I started on retail as a MNK and have a strong nostalgia for them, but i remember the slog of finding parties. I've been grabbing flint and batwings whenever I can and will keep doing that.

Thanks for the reply. Now that I know its been bum luck so far I'll keep trying. Eventually I'll hit a string of luck. Its like my healing magic skill, I don't think I saw my first skill up from healing until level 6 but now they're coming regularly (My staff skill isn't capped either and I haven't seen a skill up for days).
