No, you do not need a team of grad students. Jesus. Any undergrad with stats knowledge can do this.

Just aga a few zone's worth of trains with and without the item in a zone that doesn't drop the bud. Transcribe the data. Do a chi-square test with [bud / no bud] and [drop / no drop] as your two categorical variables. Keep sampling until you get p < 0.05. $5 says no relationship.
