I just started again lvl 10 so far but im curious as to how an economy with a few hundred players functions when it comes to auction house purchases.

Basically, how can you get rich on such low a population with slow buys and the lack of a mass player Bazaar market outside of Jeuno.

I was thinking of starting crafting but the question remains as to who will buy all the stuff you craft.

The economy on official servers of FFXI whether they like to admit it or not thrived on the RMT trade of GIL with the injection of money into the hands of players allowing faster rates of transactions to happen.

Crystals for example were an easy and fast way to make small amounts of cash.

Im just wondering cause its kind of a struggle leveling whm without any sort of feasible method to fund basic gear or spells even from NPC's.

And i'm not bitching in any way, i'm really grateful for whoever it is thats running this private server. This game was my life for a good couple of years back when it launched before i had any responsibilities in life.

The auction house has no limit to how many items you can post. As such it is filled comparably to a retail AH even with an eighth of the playerbase.

The dirt mall is located on the nasboat, and it is maybe half the size of what you would expect outside of Jeuno in era. Fairly healthy overall.

The things you mention about RMT are correct. Without them I'm seeing a higher premium placed on farming labor and big ticket endgame mercenary sales going for 30-40% less (though this may also have something to do with lower population).

If you want to make money farming, it's rrreally not too bad here. If you want to make money crafting, that can work too. I'd focus on preparation synths as sometimes their margins are actually higher than the stylish armor HQs. With no AH limit you can put lots of different items out to cover a lot of bases. Prep leathercraft, prep clothcraft, prep ingots, really you can make a nice buck if you're patient.

It's tough starting out. I would suggest avoiding leveling a mage early on as your scrolls are going to really cut in to what you have available gil-wise. Farming isn't too bad here, and camping most things that you want is laughably easy, so the "need" for gil isn't as high here as it is on retail. A really decent way to make some starting cash is to hit up Zeruhn Mines on a new job and just smash your way to level 10 farming bats. Bat Wings turn into 100 per wing via a repeatable rep quest in Sandy, (found here) so that's a great way to not only farm Wind Crystals, but also to get your Sandy rep up and get you some buffer gil to buy things in the early game.

One thing you will find here is that people are very generous compared to retail. If you need help there is almost always somebody around willing to give you a hand. Make friends. :D

Just careful to not find and exploit loopholes. Nas just killed 75% of Gil on the server back in April? due to people using bugs to farm ridiculous amounts of Gil and flood the server with it.

A lot of the stuff on the AH is just thrown up and forgotten. There's no kickback to delivery box. Retail had 7 item max and 7? day limit, which facilitated desire to sell faster and faster repricing. I think things would improve here if we could reprice easier. People pulling down 100s of items to reprice some of the first they put up doesnt happen much. There are currently some bugs in the AH kickback system though Ive heard.

As deadwing mentioned, a lot of the economy takes place on the boat between bazaars.

As deadwing also said, farming right now is the way to go for money, but crafting can make you money in materials still. There are a lot of mats on the AH that need a price decrease to facilitate faster sales. Like tiger hide stacks for 4-6k, tiger leather stacks for 40k. Same with spider webs to rainbow threads, 6x cost. There are a lot of these items that are wanted, but not at their 4x-8x cost prices. It's cheaper and more beneficial to level the crafts yourself, you generally need to for subs anyways.

People come and go a lot on this server, so supply of crafted items can fluctuate a bit. This causes your ability to make money to fluctuate quite a bit. The server is noob heavy for this reason too. Items obtainable by new players are generally oversupplied.

Final thing is that the server economy is still evening out from the massive gil destruction in march.

Oh, also pay attention to vendor prices on things. I often find armor that is on AH for 100~ gil that I can buy and vendor for 220+. People are really bad about paying attention to this.
