I have a feeling this thread might spiral out of control and get deleted, but before it does I'll give you my honest input on the various categories you mentioned to hopefully give you an understanding of what you can expect.
Toxicity:
I wouldn't say it's as toxic as retail, but there are definitely bad blood among the competing LS' core members. I usually stay out of it so long as it's kept between member to member friction among the competing shells. It's usually only if someone tries to paint a WHOLE linkshell in bad light with no justification that I take exception. If you do join a shell, any shell, I recommend you don't allow yourself to get caught up in bias propaganda you'll likely be exposed to about other shells, there's good and bad people in all LS.
Competitiveness:
I estimate there is about 5 EG shells, with a few more startups. Most endgame shell have their event schedules, and despite the level of toxicity they may have towards each other, they all work around not interrupting each other's schedule runs (hence why it's not as toxic as retail). On King camps, there's usually at least 2-3 main LS that camps them regularly, though I've seen as much as 5 different shells camping at once before.
LS Tiers:
Among the endgame shells, they are at different Tiers in terms of capabilities and what they can tackle. I'd say the 3 top shells (listed in alphabetical order: Atma, Topshelf, Yes) are pretty close to each other as they can complete all the same content with varying degree of difficulty. They all have different drive and focus, and I'd recommend talking to non-sackholder members in those shells to get an idea what their community environment is like to determine which one you might want to join. With that being said, these 3 shells are more difficult to join as you either need to have reference, or apply when they open up their recruitment. There are other EG shells around that are starting to build up and would be easier to join.
Elitism in recruitment:
For the most part, I would say none of the top LS are elitist in terms of gear requirement. I think they all prioritize attitude and loyalty when looking for members. However, it is usually in your best interest to get access to sea and sky as that goes a long way in boosting your chance of getting accepted. The jobs that are usually in demands are Cor, Brd, Blm, Smn, Rdm, Pld. Other classes have their use as well on various content, just not as high a demand.
List of some EG or Event based-EG shells that come to mind (alphabetical order):
Atma
DraconicBallad
Nova
Prose
Topshelf
Yes
There are probably smaller ones out there that I'm just not familiar with yet. Hope this help.
Well said. /endthread
