Unlike earlier MRPGs such as Dark Ages of Camelot, Everquest, Ultima Online, Diablo, Diablo II, and Meridian 59, I have not found any way to advance in this game in the early levels without killing bats, crabs, and worms that are non-aggressive. I know this to be a peculiar feature of many later MRPGs such as World of Warcraft and and Lineage II. Without casting any aspersions on this game or this server (which I congratulate you for making), I wonder if maybe this game isn't a little too "new school" for me, as I don't understand that kind of gameplay. I have ventured further away from towns in search of other foes, but anything that was aggressive seemed impossible to win against. Maybe Square was trying to teach us a moral lesson here? Better to stay in town and be level 1 or something? Or maybe I'm too old for this game...

If you want to kill aggressive mobs only, then hit level 3~4 and go do that.

You must be trying to roleplay a pacifist or something? Hate to tell you but you can't do that in FFXI. Even if you could somehow level up only killing aggressive creatures, eventually you'll need items from passive mobs or join a party that is leveling up on passive mobs. If you're doing it for roleplay I get it, but just think of it as "hunting" deer or other animals. Sometimes you just have to do it for your own survival. But I'm a little concerned for you mentally if you're worried about this from some kind of moral standpoint, honestly. It's a video game.

You might be able to do it if you use Monk with hundred fists, food, drinks and fight a beastman that is at the bottom of its level range. You would also probably need to die a few times while skilling up.

seems like he wants to role play, and his character has no reason to be killing these animals.. i don’t see how it affects you and your experience if someone wants to play a certain way.

The nonaggressive creatures you're fighting now most certainly become aggressive later down the line. If you want some lore/roleplaying reason you could maybe justify it as preemptive measures against the horrors of aggressive worms down the line.
As somebody else said it might in theory be possible to kill beastmen with a lot of luck/insane amount of patience, or grouping with a bunch of other like minded individuals.

I'm dumbfounded... This is without a doubt the first time I've ever heard this said about FFXI. If you're worried about the game being too nice to you, I assure you those first couple of levels fighting mandies or worms or whatnot are simply to lull you into a false sense of security. This game will turn all it's rings around before it slaps your face off.

New players need to learn to use the battle system. That process is streamlined by making all lv1 mobs reactive rather than active. Once a player learns the basics (assuming he or she does not stray too far from the city gates), then he or she will have to learn how to deal with mobs that can and will make the first move. It has nothing to do with ethics--it was a pragmatic player-training decision.
