Hello,

First time here. I am trying to set up my PS4 controller but am not having any luck.
1. When the controller is plugged in I have no sound.
2. I've mapped it out as per the intructions using the Config but the problem seems to be when I try to map out the direction pad for movement within the menus. It simply does not work.

About to give up unless someone can help?

EDIT - So I've tried using some of the default set ups as suggested in other posts. Scrolling through the menus still does not work. Also I still do not have sound.

I had the same issue. Research said just click defaut in the gamepad setup, map your buttons, movement and camera controls and don't touch the menu settings as its already mapped for you. You also need to enable XI input. I dont recall what I did to get everything working exactly but I turned the ones above Xinput off then back on and everything worked fine. Working on sound now....

*Ninja edit* I also ran the config as an administrator. I use my PS4 controller and I had to DL install and setup DS4 windows (treats your PS4 controller as a 360 controller). No bluetooth capabilities yet as I need a Bluetooth 2.0 dongle for that.

The sound issue is because of the headphone jack on the controller... Windows is likely switching it to there (especially with the newer PS4 PRO DS4 controllers and Win10).

Provided you are in Windows 10, it is pretty easy to address by clicking the Windows speaker icon near your systray clock. Above the volume bar it should say what device is currently being used for output, with an arrow to the right of it. Click that arrow to select a different output device.

Alternatively, you can right click the speaker icon and select to Open Sound Settings. In that panel you should find a section for selecting your output device as well.

As for the controls themselves... I gave up on my DS4. Had to go into the Windows Device and Printers section of Control panel, right-click the game controller and select "Game Controller Settings", then the Properties button to confirm all buttons worked (may need to use the Settings tab to re-calibrate with Windows if the stick/sliders are not centering properly). Sometimes the game would not pickup on the controller at all unless I did this FIRST. Then FFXI Config would set almost all the buttons like I wanted using the Default (D) preset. Sometimes I would launch the game and the controller would not respond at all, and I would have to go back through control panel to that properties panel and confirm Windows was seeing the buttons, than alt-tab back to the game and it would be working again.

As if that wasn't annoying enough... the real kicker was that after playing for a while, it would start having bad input lag on the Square/Cross/Circle/Triangle buttons. Everything else was still responsive, just those buttons on the right would start to lag until I did the L3/R3 press and hold for a few seconds to re-calibrate itself. Thought maybe it was just something odd about my USB controller. It appeared to get better when I looped it through a USB hub, but it just took longer for the lag to kick in is all. Even unpairing it from the PS4 and pairing it to the laptop's internal BlueTooth didn't fix it---eventually it would always come back.

So... I opted for a PS3/PC knock-off controller instead. Can nab them for $20-$30, even wireless ones with a dedicated dongle. The PDP Afterglow PS3/PC model I found at Wal-Mart for $25 off the shelf ($20 online at times) is working well with the exception of how sensitive the L2/R2 buttons are. Barely touch them and the macro pallets pop up. The triggers stick out a little further than I am used to with my DS4, so it took some getting used to. I needed to replace my PS3 controller anyway, so it was a win-win for me (the analog bands are shot in the left stick, so it doesn't return to center on it's own anymore).
