SMN is a very rigid job whose damage/potency of bloodpact doesn't scale much with magic skill and gear and in the typical xp party support buffs won't improve damage/potency either. The question then is should smn be balanced around performance in an average xp party (but then will under-perform in an efficient party set-up) or if it should be balanced around performance in an efficient party set-up? If you think the former then the nerf is justified but if you think the latter then even pre-nerf smn was not a top job for xp parties.
SMN is probably the single most versatile job in FFXI. In an "efficient" exp party we aren't spamming double slap/predator claws we're using hastega and healing just as well as a WHM or RDM because we're filling that role. The low level Rage focused smn in an exp party only exists on Nasomi because the BPs were overtuned. They are much closer to in era retail now.

I think to put it in perspective, im currently in a Terrigan party as pld, and with Taco, Pro3, and defender, my def is 612, and yet Tail blow, brain crush etc all do more damage to me than Shiva, 200-250 compared to 150-200 to Shiva. Post nerf that’s stronger than a well geared, fed, and fully defence mode pld... plus dishing out 400-600 slaps against incredibly tough xp level mobs... so how will those poor summoners ever cope!
IIRC pets have an innate damage taken reduction that you don't get as a PLD.
