If I leveled a character to 9 and decided I wanted to start over and re-roll another character, can I put all the gil and items I have accumulated so far into my bank stash so I don't lose all that work when I start the new character? How can I preserve what I have already earned? Thank you.

You could trade them to another one of your characters to hold or to another person you trust, then trade em back to the new character.

You could just change jobs, no reason to make a new character, unless you are switching race or starting city or something.

You do not need to make a new character. Here on FFXI, you can have ALL jobs on a single character. Your 9 levels of EXP is not wasted. Simply change jobs in your Mog House and start at level 1!

Ok, I wasn't sure if it was that simple since I had already selected a main class. That's a relief. I know. I'm a noob. I'll get it figured out. Thank you all for your help.

You can change jobs at any time..in fact. you will need to level multiple jobs as subjobs and for different content. Also, you can change your race once you get a lvl50 job and lvl30 craft... there's really no reason to re-roll in this game. Especially once you start getting annoying quests done like subjob, chocobo, nation missions, CoP, etc... It's all about accumulating progress over months/years.

Also, if you aren't already, look into dualboxing. it is HIGHLY recommended that you dualbox. makes your progress happen MUCH faster and much more easily. You could be leveling on one character, and fishing or gathering or crafting on another. So you can progress and make money at the same time, or double up on making money, or double up on leveling and such. Also let's you do certain content by yourself that you'd otherwise need help with.

There's really no reason not to dualbox. Barely uses any of your computer resources to just pop open a 2nd client. and download SwitchMon + a remote controller to play with. $20 on amazon for a 3rd party xbox controller if you don't already have one. I got a wired one so no battery headaches or $$$
