hello, i decide to try to make some money while leveling up my jobs so i farmed a bunch of Silk threads and put them on the auction house for the listed amount, the price hasn't changed at all but those silk threads have yet to be sold after around 4 weeks.

I was wondering how the AH works in terms of what sells or not.

thanks in advance!

you can check the auction house price history to see how often items are (or aren't) selling.

also whoever lists the item for the lowest price will be the one that sells next , thats why you see people undercutting prices a lot.

so if silk thread is 10k a stack (idk actual price) and you list it for exactly 10k , but someone list it for 9,999 , their stack of silk will sell first. But also say someone listed it for 5k a stack , If no one attempts to bid 5k on the item you wont ever know someone listed it for so low.

there is also a built in auction house viewer on the site that you can use whenever.

If prices arent changing drastically on the item, its likely people are undercutting by 1-500gil to sell theirs first.

In addition to what kuro said about how the ah works...

Silk thread can be bought for about 6k/stack from the clothcraft guild. In retail this didn't matter because there were so many crafters that they would never go that low

On nasomi though there are very few people crafting so guild prices often sit at their minimum.

I prefer buying from guilds, not just because they're often the same price but i don't have to wait for loading from the auction hall for every stack of things i buy. I can just go grab 15 stacks of something and be on my way

This makes farming on nasomi for some of the staple items not as good as they were on retail

It's the complete opposite for me. Assuming prices are identical, it's better to buy from the AH because it's more gil in circulation that can come back to you (the crafter). If someone sells you 50k worth of silk thread, they now have 50k that they can spend on gear (potentially) from you. It's good for the economy.

I think this is one of the reason we have such a stagnant economy irl. Rather than pay the lowest people more money, the top would rather horde it for themselves, when the lowest group of people will actually *spend* 99% of the extra money they would earn, stimulating our consumer economy, actually increasing profits for corporations (even though many companies are already posting record profits every year). Everyone then wins.

*disclaimer: I have never studied economics, so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

its good for the economy to reduce the rate of inflation too

also, giving people money so that they can maybe buy things from me increases risk without adding any value

Wrong -- there's a healthy inflation target. It's generally around 2%. 2% inflation encourages growth but doesn't devalue currency too much. That's why the Federal Reserve consistently changes interest rates, to try to force a 2% inflation target.

In the game, I do agree though -- it's better for us to have a positive inflation than negative, so sell to NPCs and buy from the AH.

But if it's cheaper to buy from the NPC, I don't blame you -- spending more money than you need to is stupid, obviously.
