Holding back does lower your overall damage. Getting hate is easy, especially with a sub par Paladin which quickly becomes a cluster as the mob -- which in turn, makes everyone in the party "chase" the mob. I've only seen one or two Paladin use cover effectively.
This is another thing people continually to miss. FFXI is a game about cooperating as a team. Every player needs to do their part. There is no time when people can be lazy or have sub-par gear(at least gear up half-decently like Roki does) or expect something to work "just because it's supposed to be a good job/gear/party setup/etc"
FFXI is a game about timing with your teammates. If your PLD isn't doing their job, nobody else can, and to call RNG "nerfed" because other players fail to play the game well is just ridiculous.
There's also the fact that there is a change job feature in your moghouse FOR A REASON. As Nas said in a Q&A, THERE IS NO SETUP/JOB THAT IS USEFUL IN EVERY SINGLE SITUATION. RNG is a niche job and always has been. It's very useful for OWNM or other kite/etc. fights and that's the entire point of it. You have flash-enmity(the ability to pull the mob at just the right time is a skill you can learn) and whenever Nas fixes Flashy Shot this will become even more apparent. I sense he's been following these "lolRNG" posts and is planning on introducing a few fixes, so why don't you just work with what you have instead of complaining and in the meantime, you should have another job or two at level 75 anyway, no matter what job you had first. I'm leveling up brd67 because I know that BRD is useful for endgame in many situations that RNG simply would be more of a liability in. I also have BST73 that is useful for stuff that I like to do on my own or teaming up with other BSTs. I also have WHM60 that I am leveling up for when outside heals/R3s/too many BRDs and not enough heals for some reason kind of situations. I also have blm42 I plan to bring up for manaburn situations and similar situations that I've mentioned before where RNG would get in the way and when there's already enough BRDs(for some reason).
Flexibility is key to this game, and it is what sets it apart from other MMOs like World of Warcraft, In many games you play your job. In FFXI you actually play your character. If more people understood and used the change job feature and understood their role in any given situation(which can change depending on the type of fight/setup/etc. There is no single way to play any job. You need to be dynamic) and thought more about the ENTIRE GROUP rather than themselves, the game would be a much less toxic place.
I, for one, am not going to let these toxic people ruin my FFXI experience.
