In my experience, the optical earring NM takes between 1-2 hours to pop and your best bet is to ignore retail and just slaughter every sapling north of the river on the way to pal mines.

I've popped it two or three times now. Once for Sinclair!

Probably about a game day. It was awhile ago, but I was just half-afk and tabbed over every 30min or so to see if the ??? was there. Just saying to bring more than 3 distilled waters and expect a slightly longer wait.
