I've been trying to find a way to increase how often I get a skill up by fishing. I am level 13, and targeting just Giant Catfish. I'll go 20, 30, 40, 50 catches, and not see a single increase in skill rate. It's a total of 13 levels above my current fishing level, which means it should be giving me skill ups often, if going by the crafting skill up rate.

Should I be targeting fish closer to my skill level to increase the rate of skill ups, or should I go for fish that are as close to the other end with being able to catch them?

Just keep following whatever guide you are using.

1) Fishing skillups don't vary much. It's about 1 per hour. Sometimes more, sometimes less.
2) If you spend all of your time searching for a better method, that is time wasted.
3) Once you get to 76, you are basically done.
4) The money comes in at a steadily increasing rate, so again, wasted time and effort looking for a better method.

Once you hit 76 you won't be worrying so much about it anymore and it'll just be "how I make gil."

About 24 hours ago I hit 76 fishing. I averaged a full fishing level for every 3 to 4 stacks of fish I was skilling up on. It stayed pretty consistent, sometimes a little less, sometimes a little more. You just gotta stick with it and get it done, then you're at Black Sole making decent gilz.

As stated above, it really helps that each time you move to the next fish, the gil gets a little better.

I do enjoy fishing, but it feels like it's so rare to see a skill up happen. I've filled my inventory completely twice before I saw a single 0.1 increase. It feels even slower than retail. A small increase to skill point gain would be nice, even if it came at a cost of gil. I'd be fine with that. I do agree though, looking around for ways to increase it does waste time. I was just wondering if there was a reason as to why I'm getting slow skill ups. I guess It's just bad luck.

By the way, how long did it take you to get to 76 if you don't mind me asking?

So here's the thing: If it were based on luck, and not an actual background calculation that sometimes forces a skillup (or several 0.2s, 0.3s in quick succession, as it seems to do) then you would have a population of people that literally finished in 3 days, and a population of people that took a week to get a 0.1.

In my case, it was about 2 weeks: I was on vacation one week and spent most of my time fishing and working on missions when fishing got boring (some 4 hour days fishing, some 8 hours while watching movies or cleaning the house). The week after that was back to work and only doing 2-3 hours a night.

Port sandy was not very fun so I feel your pain. Having 30 inventory slots (minus 2) and having to go back and forth constantly to clear inventory was mind numbing. To be honest, I stopped selling my catfish and just powering through for 'faster' skillups.

Good luck dude. If you need in-game peptalks message me (havels). Fishing is a great GREAT way to ensure you can always go out and get some gil in your pocket. Don't give up!!

Yea, the limited inventory space is a huge factor. But all that gil just dropped though? 13 levels on 102 gil fish is a HUGE amount IMO. But thank you.

I get my best skill ups when the moon phase is 45%-65%, I've gotten 6-8 skill ups in one hour several times. I only started paying attention to this when I got into the 80's.

It's taken me about a month to get up to level 58. With that said there are times I might only get 15 minutes in. There are other times I am getting a good 5 hours in. I think I average probably about a level per hour.

That could be part of the problem, in the way that you are looking at this. You are fishing to make money, not fishing to gain levels of skill for no reason. Concentrate on how much gil you are earning over time, and let the skill gains be of a lesser concern/consideration.

Think about it logically: Once you hit max skill, you will never be even considering that factor, ever again... and it will be solely about the main reason you are doing the activity in the first place. If gaining a lvl won't matter at 96 (or 100), then why does it have to matter now? You can just sit back and peacefully fish, and focus on making the doughs.

Do you have a guitar?

Play guitar while you fish.
