Why didn't I think of that. Of course *I'm* the problem!

Unwarranted sarcasm, it honestly sounds like it might be true. There's no need to be a turd. If discord bothers you, don't join it. Period.

It's incredibly easy to assign ranks and permissions to people. You can give regular members permission to only post text if it becomes an issue. There used to be a Nasomi Discord and I don't remember any issues with it. It certainly would allow Nas to manage his PM's much easier than the no history 1992 IRC crap we've had up to this point.

Huh? IRC chat history persists indefinitely as long as the client is open, or can be logged to file permanently, or one can set up a bounce server for themselves which logs all chat while you are offline and serves it up to you when you come online.

Your problem with PMs is probably a personal problem, as the nasomi channel title says "Dont PM me"

woah woah woah.. i'm a fan of discord, but no hating on IRC now.. a real IRC client(not web based like we used before) something like irssi changes the game!

The logic here is flawed. I'm highlighting a problem discord has with users harassing other users.

Rather than arguing "harassment should be prohibited", Jude is making the argument that those uncomfortable with harassment should avoid the channel.

It is an option, but it takes on the attitude of "blame the victim" - or rather "it's not my fault if that action I took harmed you, but your fault for being harmed."

A similar metaphor is to say "If only you were not at that intersection, my unsafe driving would not have caused a collision." - its more logical to say that the driver should have driven safely.

I made the point, and was called an idiot. To each their own - but calling me a turd doesn't contradict my point.

no you're assuming that there is a problem that will need to be fixed before the channel has even been setup based on your experiences with communities other than this one. That's the flawed logic here mate.

I like the people that play here, and I'm happy to be in this community.

That said, I doubt that we're entirely devoid of trolls, jerks, and racists. There are fewer opportunities to behave as such with a well moderated discord (or no discord).

No, your real point is that this is a thread trying to figure out a place for the server to have something similar to what IRC provided. Discord being more likely to lead to harassment of players is a legit concern for a server-wide communication outlet. "Don't join" is absurd when the point is figuring out where people can go to get info from nasomi. Whether or not you're correct about discord leading to more harassment is something to argue about though.

This is a fair conclusion. My experiences say that it does lead to increases in harassment - but I will admit I'm wrong if it turns out my concerns were a moot point.

Some of your other (mostly sound) points aside, I don't really understand why victim blaming has such a negative connotation. Victim blaming is actual a natural process involved in aspects of critical thinking. If we understand that people are assholes that can bother us, and they will always exist in an "everyone welcome" environment, then it's up to you to take steps to mitigate it. The thing about assholes and law breakers is that they don't obey societal niceties or laws, and they'll always exist. They cannot possibly not exist, it's up to you to deal with them in a manner that you find reasonable, or don't put yourself in a position to deal with them. Ergo, if you don't like discord, don't join it.

Your entirely anecdotal experience is that discord leads to additional harassment? (That's interesting.)

How do you plan to prove that any harassment incurred is due to discord and would not have otherwise occured?

Regardless, I think discord is out the window, as I've heard that an attempt was shut down. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
