Hi therrre,

I've been nonchalantly collecting information regarding gamepad issues that myself and other players have had when using them with FFXI. And for the past few years, I feel I've compiled a somewhat useful guide that players can use to get their controllers working for them.

If you are looking for detailed walkthrough of getting yourself set up with a gamepad, feel free to check out the following links. They contain potential prrroblems you may run into, as well as solutions for many issues you may face.

Have you used this guide and have either failed to find assistance or got exactly the help you needed? Please reply to this post with your controller problem, and if you found a resolution (whether it was through me or elsewhere).

------------------------------------------------------

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=192&start=10#p11893 - If your controller's buttons are doing things they shouldn't, or directional pad / analog sticks are not responding or doing things they shouldn't be. (Read here if you're experiencing issues while attempting to configure a new controller)

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4299#p16769 - *For Xbox controllers* If you see "Enable xInput" grayed out on your configuration tool. (Movement, camera not working / triggers responding slowly or not at all, but other buttons do. This issue sometimes appears in earlier versions of Windows operating systems.)

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3971#p15137 - If a controller isn't recognized at all in-game, but it's configured and tested using FFXIpadConfig Tool.

Here are some ideas that may work for you. Read through those topics that relate to your problems. One important thing to note is that you run ffxipadconfig as administrator to ensure the new settings are saved.

I was able to get the Xbox One controller "fully functional" on my MacBook Pro with Nasomi running through Wine. I'm using the "Default Setup E" as instructed in previous posts. The driver I'm using for the Xbox One is called 360Controller and can be found at here: https://github.com/360Controller/360Controller/releases.

Problem 1: Y-axis is inverted in-game on the movement stick. Appears to be working properly via the driver and config menu.
Issue: Unknown; In the config menu, the left stick (movement) seems to function properly and works just fine in the driver as well. Must be some communication error within the code.
Solution: 360Controller has an option to invert just the Y-axis on the controller, check that box and done. You can also take this time to figure out how you'd like your camera stick to act as well.

Problem 2: D-pad would not register when setting up "Menu" directional control devices in the config menu but does register as a button (button # per directional input).
Issue: Best assumption based on controller knowledge; the tech for controllers is newer than the game. Controllers these days usually come with analog triggers; this allows the player to ease or slam on the gas/break in a racing game (in other words, pressure sensitive). In an older game, like this one, it will see those triggers as analog sticks, neutral on the controller being "Up" and pressing it down being "Down." SO that means when you open the config for "Menus" the system sees two analog sticks being pressed all the way up.
Solution: Kinda tricky and little ridiculous, but works.
    1. Go grab some tape, we'll need two small pieces that we can throw away after.
    2. Open the "Menu" directional control devices window and press "Button 1" five times, this should breeze you through the setup.
    3. Now open up the "Test Gamepad" window and press down on one of the triggers until you see the "Menu" dial/registration move up or down.
    4. Position the dial directly (as close as you can) to the center and tape the trigger down so that it stays there. Click ok once it stays there.
    5. Repeat step 2, 3 and 4 exactly for the trigger that isn't taped.
    6. Go back to the "Menu" directional control devices window. This time hold the appropriate D-pad directionals when asked (Up, Down, Right, Left when asked).
    7. Go back to "Test Gamepad" and press on D-pad buttons, the "Menu" dial should be matching the buttons you press.
    8. Remove the tape and make sure it still works, for good measure.
NOTE: Unfortunately, you won't be able to set ANY commands to the D-pad, otherwise the software will prioritize the command over the directional (ex: if I set "Up" on the D-pad to "Take Screenshot" it will no longer work as "Up" in the menus).

Really hope this helped out some people! I haven't even really started the game because I've been messing around with this, so I'm excited to get back into it!
Hope to see you in Vana'diel!
