Oddly enough, I don't recall hearing a single complaint or comment from any former Alpha members regarding the fairness to the endgame community of Deadwing coding fixes for various content while they were in Alpha. If memory serves, most were very excited and asked for details and updates whenever Deadwing sporadically logged on. I do, however, recall plenty of elitism and rampant disparaging of the rest of the server's endgame community by some of those former members, something that has hopefully subsided in their new environment.

Regardless of anyone's personal opinion of him, Deadwing has contributed more to this server than any other single person aside from Nasomi himself; it wouldn't hurt if people showed some damn gratitude that they even have the content available now to begin with. Had he not fixed Sea, many of the people complaining about him now would likely have no discernible goal or purpose to keep them playing at this stage of their time here.

Finally, i don't know why you all seem think he has a 100% guide to killing the damn thing; anyone who was around in Alpha when he was coding fixes knows damn well that the actual implementation never works exactly how it is supposed to. This was seen numerous times with Land Kings, Sky, and Sea fixes; these all evolved into their current, (mostly) accurate, working states with subsequent updates and fixes using information gleaned from testing the inaccurate versions. Given that he tries to code things to 1:1 retail standards; I would bet my character those three things that you guys noticed that are abnormal from retail were not intentionally coded by Deadwing and are a result of this server's well-known quirks, hence why he wants people to share information. What would be the point of him asking at all if he had an infallible road map to winning the fight in the first place?

This seems to be the strategy on the forums right now:

Yes we know who Kaeko is, his livejournal is one of the best sources of FFXI information on a wide variety of topics, not just AV.

As for why we aren't sharing our strategy, I'm not giving up on my own linkshell before we even attempt it. We think our group is capable of getting a kill, and until proven otherwise that's the assumption we are working with. There is still a lot of testing to be done, but until we are 100% sure we can't do it with our own linkshell, we aren't looking to the outside. I wouldn't fault anyone else for having that same mindset. That's the last you'll hear from me, and hopefully the rest of us, about it.

Good information on that link. Has AV ever been killed on retail?

Retail AV came in four stages.

Stage 1: No draw in, no anti wall-of-justice code. --Killed by ApathyLS on Remora and I believe a shell on Odin using the wall of justice exploit.

Stage 2: Draw in that would activate if someone attempted to use wall of justice. --First legit kill comes here, a KC zerg by SapereAude

Stage 3: Following negative publicity on an 18hr pandemonium warden fight, PW and AV are both nerfed and given time limits in September 2008. AV's HP moved down to 66k, given draw in full time. 66kHP is not terribly difficult to zerg and many linkshells killed him with a basic non-CSS zerg setup. (youtube videos of this abound)

Stage 4: AV given souleater resistance one week later. Outside of a possible MV exploit kill, I do not believe he was killed until TP burns with perfect defense started to be the norm around the time of the level cap raise.

I have discussed these stages of retail AV at length with a few people, but it is not public knowledge the exact stage or which blend he is in here.
TopShelf probably has a decent idea.

BtL (the LS that fought PW for 18hrs) killed AV around September 2006 without KC zerg or WoJ exploit.

They were able to lock it's 2hrs/TP/spells by killing the wynav's at the same time while damaging AV.
Took them around 5hrs of killing wynav's iirc to lock all of it's moves, but that seems to be more random, cause sometimes it would lock the 2hrs only but still spam TP/spells or it would lock TP moves only.

That was actually the first and only kill how it was supposed to be killed pre perfect defense, by locking all of it's shit, but i don't know if it was a bug that AV randomly got locked with the wynav's or if it was intentional by SE since they have shown a different way to lock him and after the 2008 update, killing wynav's at the same time didn't do anything, so people were only able to lock the regen and 2hrs.

AKA "Deadwing has lots of insider information that everyone was curious about." Thank you for proving the overall point Eps. Everyone knows that is true (especially ex-Alpha members) yet we just aren't allowed to say it out loud for some reason.

This. Maybe those complaining should leave AV alone?

Considering everyone I know here (including myself) has ass blasted mobs in a potato state and obtained gear, the thread is quite amusing.

Yet, if you really were an ex-Alpha member, which remains to be seen given that you hide behind anonymity, you would also know that Deadwing's general response when people asked for information was along the lines of, "You'll see when its live." He doesn't know when it will go live either, as confirmed by Nasomi himself in that witch hunt thread from last month. So yeah, he has information in so much as he made the damn thing work by coding it for everyone. Are you saying he shouldn't be allowed to play because he took his personal time to improve the server for all of us? That's a pretty childish and selfish way to look at it if so.

If you don't like the situation, I suggest you go ahead and code some things yourself. I certainly wouldn't begrudge you the "insider information" you would gain, because you would be doing everyone a service by providing content, which benefits the entire community. Failing that, try lobbying Nasomi for a detailed change log that includes HNM updates whenever new code goes in to put everyone on a level playing field.

Whatever you do, (I suspect it will be absolutely nothing,) this hypocritical, revisionist BS by supposed adults needs to stop, because all it is doing is alienating newer players at this point.
