I said starter areas, not cities for the Crayfish. You can catch them in the city, but it is easier to do so outside in the starter zones. I suggested the bait and rod combination that I did because it is nearly free to obtain. There are better combinations, but they will cost you $ and this guide assumes you have none. I did the Crayfish stage of my own fishing skill-ups at the pond in Ronfaure; the "you lost your catch" messages are Moat Carp and will get better once you get a few skill levels. Once you can catch Moat Carp reliably at 6-7 skill, switch to the Insect Balls to isolate Moat Carp. When you can afford it, switch to a Composite Rod. I wasn't focusing on giving you the ideal in this guide, I was giving you the attainable on a 10g wallet.

So the reason you're having the issue is that unless you make it to Selbina, you can't directly target the lower fish. You still get them, you just lose the ones that are higher right now.

No. It says how much you've gained, and then what lvl you are. It'll always say what your current level is. If you want to know your exact fishing skill, or confirm it's rising, log into the Account page here on the website and look under crafts.

It sounds like you're having an awful time fishing, 0-5 is pretty awful. The best thing to do is just turn on a TV show and shut off the brain while you mindlessly fish. Currently at 22.4 and it was a lot of time invested. If you're just trying to get starting gear perhaps it would be better to do something else for money. Perhaps it's simpler just to tell people to farm bird blood and watch them all start living in Bubu? Maybe we could get some parties going over there and make Valkurm a little more bearable?
