How you found us? I actually found Nasomi via a google search years ago while I was teaching in China and played for a bit, but my connection was so unstable I couldn't group with anyone or really enjoy myself. I'm currently back in the states working on a Masters in Education and looking for some good old fashion nostalgia, after a quick google search I saw from Reddit that Nasomi is still going strong.
I also found my character was still on the server, so I've got a young SanD'orian hume who isn't ready for the dunes yet in any class with dreams of becoming a Paladin and about 3000 gil to his name.
Other MMO's? I played LoTRO, WoW (with friends), STO and FFXIV - the closest to capturing the magic of FFXI for me was LOTRO but that was a group that had a great RP community which is a very different magic. WoW had some friends playing it which was the only real pull for me.
I started XI as a Monk and made it to the early 50s on retail, clawing my way up the whole time - but I actually wound up tanking more than Dpsing because out tanks kept dropping and it was better than waiting forever for a tank. It was in WoW, LoTRO, and FFXIV that I found I like tanking (and FFXIV that I found I enjoy healing as well).
I'm happy to level as a RDM or BRD first to get the cash flow I need to support my Paladin, Monk, and Samurai dreams (Oh yeah, in Retail the class I really wanted to level was Sam, but by the time I got it unlocked I'd sunk so much energy into Monk that I figured I'd make Sam my second big class because I was eager to go see the world - as a result I never really got to play it.
Anything else? I'm not really up for a serious commitment to a LS or static just yet but I'd love to grab a dunes party or two in the near-ish future so that I can get to Jeuno and work on my choco-license again. I haven't decided if/which craft I'll go into. There is a part of me that very much wants to get back up to a good level in Monk and go back to camping Castle O. for the O.Kote. I managed to claim the mob from gil farmers 3 times on retail, beat it twice with no luck. The third time the gil farmers stood by and watched me die, claimed the mob, then I home pointed.
I think I'm most nostalgic for my early Dunes parties. Some of them were amazingly good and others that were amazingly bad but still very fun. I fondly remember one night where I was the senior most player as my War/Monk. I started the night at Level 13 and ended the night at level 11 but made sure my healer didn't die once and by the time we were wrapping up everyone knew what they needed to do. We didn't have the best camp (Had a gobbie wander into our camp a couple times) and we'd get accidental spawn/links from lizards. I met my best online friend of that era in a Dunes party that went wrong.
I'm not sure when I'll be able to get on, how often, or any of that. Life is pretty busy, but when I can I'll pop back on for the music and the feel.
