I plan go to RDM/WHM so I can solo stuff and join parties

I agree that having both is often nice. That said, you would often be happy with 1 WHM and 3 RDM, but not with 1 RDM and 3 WHM. And if the choice is 1 WHM or 1 RDM, the RDM wins 99% of the time.

The problem is that the choice is often 1 RDM or 1 WHM that's some guy's alt.

PLD is a given reason but why isn't NIN on the list? Too squishy and hard to keep up shadows on some attacks?

You don't need ninja specifically for any fight, PLD is topdog and often a necessity in alot of fights. Ninja can tank fine, they're just extremely reliant on support and have no defensive abilities or oh shit button. NIN/RDM can relieve a little bit of that, but it also loses it's big hate spikes from /drk, which still works out fine.
