This happened a while ago when I first actually needed the Kazham airship pass, I've decided to skip the quest and instead just fish up 148kgil and buy the pass. Seemed to me like the quest would have takes longer to complete. On another occasion I've reached the same conclusion since it seemed as if just assembling a party for the quest (don't remember which) will take longer than fishing up the gil, however there were other occasions in which I opted for the quest, e.g. the boarding pass quest, since even solo-farming the items is way quicker than fishing 500kgil.

Obviously there are quests that cannot be avoided (e.g. Genkai, items that are exclusive etc.) but there are many quests that can be skipped if your fishing and/or crafting skills are high enough. I'd like to hear your opinions about which quests you think are worth taking and which should be "fish-bypassed".

Is basically what I read and this will be a never ending issue until fish NPC sell back prices are completely gutted.

First of all it's not "too good" because you need to virtually max-out your fishing skill before you can make decent gil (after the nerf) and grinding for a month doing virtually nothing but fishing needs to give you some sort of advantage.
Second, while it may not represent Nasomi's opinion, I doubt that S-E would have put the option to bypass certain quests with gil (e.g. the airship pass quest) if they hadn't thought that that option will be used occasionally.
Third, because if fishing is nerfed too much then eventually another craft will take its place. It may take even longer to level but eventually if you grind enough you will be able to get decent gil.
Last, even if you insist on nerfing everything it just increases the value of each gil. Yeah, buying airship passes from NPCs may no longer be viable but the rewards for many quests are rare but not exclusive items, which means they can be auctioned, which means that at least some will be. They may go for 1mgil now because some players will grind for a week or so to get them but if you nerf NPC values so much that hardly anyone has more than 100kgil then AH prices will also be undercut accordingly. You will always be able to skip some quests and/or BCNMs using gil.

You're an idiot, how do you think gil is created, some central bank printing it? Vendor'ing fish or whatever is part of the game from the beginning whether you like it or not.

That's how I perceived OPs post and suddenly I'm "insisting" for nerfs.

Got it.

That could have been taken 2 different ways but the obvious assumption was that I wanted things nerfed.

Understood.

Well I'm sorry that I took this the wrong way, I'm just sick of people complaining about perfectly fine ways to make gil just because they're too lazy to do it themselves. We already got a nerf on some fish prices (high level ones too, that you have to put work in before you can catch them) because of those lazy hecktards.

Instead of paying 148k for an airship pass you will probably use one time, wait until jungle is controlled by your nation, get the OP quest, then have some one use a tidal talisman from jeuno to warp you to kazham.

And Christmas is coming up in a couple months, so you can all get your own tidal talismans soon.

We're staying a little bit off-topic here, so let's get back to my main question -
When facing a quest whose reward can be bought instead - what will make you choose which option?

Personally, I look at the time requirement of the quest and the value of the quest reward.

Can you farm that much money in less time? If so - makes more sense to just buy the reward item.
Do you struggle to farm or is the quest relatively quick and simple to complete? Do the quest.
