All hail Composite Rod + Sabiki rig.

The vendor fishing guide on the NasWiki is best IMO. Took me 3 weeks to hit lv. 56 fishing and have finally been able to afford gear and weapons.

I don't think you should buy the composite rod right away as it cost ~25kgil and if you're only beginning to fish it may be virtually everything you own. Besides, fishing is a good source of income but it's not for everyone since it requires a great amount of patience over time. One's better practice with a cheap rod / lure (like the clothespole + little worm) for a few hours to know what fishing feels like then decide whether to buy relatively expensive gear.

Also, IDK what happened to this poor fellow but for me 400 little worms were enough to take the skill all the way to 5, the cap for cobalt jellyfish.

I was gifted the rod from another LS mate. Regardless, I was able to pay them back shortly after.

Nice :)
Personally I didn't get such an offer (neither did I ask) and when I started fishing I only had around 10kgil, maybe even less. That time also moat carp prices were undercut so much that it felt like a waste of time, it was actually better to vendor tricolored carp at that point so earning gil was very painful. When I got 25kgil I was obviously very hesitant about spending it all on a composite rod for obvious reasons and even after I bought it at the beginning I felt as though it was a mistake because I was reluctant to travel all the way to windy to uncap. Glad I did though, that rod paid for itself many times.

A missed ranged attack will neither claim nor aggro a mob.

I had both threads open. I must have posted in the wrong one. Oops.
