hmm I have written a very long message saying that you will eventually lvl up most jobs to some lvls anyway. somehow it's lost some where. the job you chose can be changed in your mug house freely even at lvl 1. you can start on any job and then change to something else afterward (I think you can change your job at will from the very beginning I am not sure).
if you want to play this game for a long time you will change job a lot. nothing is set on stone.

Well, of course no one is suggesting he delete his character - he just needs to swap jobs.

I would never recommend THF as the first job to take to 75 for a new player, though. The long seeking times in comparison to basically any other class is just going to suck so much fun out of the game. I'm just taking it to 45, and even though I'm running around with +1 gear, hairpin/boots, spamming crossbow bolts, etc., party invites are so slow I've found I get more xp/hr by going /bst and soloing.

My only point was, that he did in fact mention deleting his char, in at least one of the 2 threads he made around same time... and no one told him not to do it. In fact someone was telling him how he could, and move his items and gil etc.

It's all good. I initially thought I messed up because I chose THF as my first class and thought I was locked into a Main. When I realized that wasn't the case, I just switched to Monk. It was definitely an easy level to 10 compared to THF but whoever said it takes an hour to get there was wrong, as it took several hours. I had a level 30 offer to group with me and heal me and that didn't seem to work out too well as I stopped getting EXP. They then switched to a level 17 job and I still wasn't getting EXP while grouped. So, the grouping thing today didn't really work for me. I was making better use of my time by soloing mobs. My initial thought is that this is a social game, so why would grouping be all messed up? I'm playing this game as a fresh perspective, having never played it before. The only negative I've seen is finding noob gear in the AH that is priced higher than the same gear off vendors at H-6 near the Bastok Mines area. It's hard to accumulate money as it is to spend twice as much on an overpriced item. Anyway, I think I'm on the right track now. Thank you all.

Regarding grouping, grouping works with people around the same level. In this game there is level sync, which would make the level 17 and you the same level (sync to lowest level) and your XP would be the same. There is 10 level limit, so you would not be able to sync with level 30.

You will get there though. 10-12 is probably better to solo and kill all the easy stuff as fast as you can anyway, and think about dunes around 12-14. Trust me, as you learn the game, the spots and the stuff, it will be easier, but it does sound like you are on the right track. (ie/ using cheap attack food makes it way faster)

if you're not multi-clienting a second toon to grind faster or heal to avoid breaks you're doing it wrong

I wouldn't expect a newbie to be able to do this, I have leveled jobs to 10 myself within an hour but the conditions were perfect and I already know exactly what to do, don't sweat it.
Either stick to fighting lots of Easy Prey mobs, or fewer Decent Challenge mobs. Make sure you use the /check command on monsters to gauge their strength! Unless you know what you're doing anything beyond Decent Challenge/Even Match will probably kill you, and make sure you do not fight more than one thing at a time (some monsters attack on sight or help other monsters).

Rule of thumb is a party needs to have a maximum of a three level gap, anything beyond that the XP will drop right off (so you can't just roll around with a lv.75 in your party bulldozing everything). Generally you'll start partying at level 11-13, you'll also encounter a thing called level sync which will match everyone's level, but worry about that later.

Things look expensive, but you'll be surprised how quickly you can make your own money. The simplest thing to do is take all the items/crystals you've looted during fighting monsters and stack them to 12 items (Make sure the option to auto sort items is enabled!) and sell those on the auction house, make sure you hold onto those beastmen seals as well!

You're in Bastok, collect Crystals/Ores/Bird Feathers/Beehive Chips/Crab Meat/Quadav Backplates/Goblin Masks etc etc and sell them to players.

It is no accident that you find that the "Grind Seems Very Real." Sometimes I feel that, other than the players, the grind is the only thing in this game that is real.

Just wanted to point out something about the EP/DC approach. You will need to periodically fight EM+ mobs to boost your skill level significantly. Otherwise, you will find yourself considerably lacking in your accuracy when it matters most, and if you aren't using accuracy and/or dex boosting gear/foods it can become a problem.

One good approach is to pull one as your last couple of mobs before logging off. This way you can burn through your 2-hour (Hundred Fists) and really lean into a hard target to give your primary weapon skill level a shot in the arm. The ability will cool down while you are logged off, so migt as well take advantage of the boosted mode to skill up a bit.

Something else to be mindful of too is that you will have secondary weapon proficiencies as well. MNK is pretty handy with an attack staff and attack club (they don't have mage stat boosts and have higher base damage ratings). So you can grab a cheap one of each to smack mobs around once in while to pre-level those secondary skills for another job. WAR is one of the best for this tactic, as it has decent skill caps in most of the weapons.

look at the gear situation like this - i have 2 level 75 jobs, and about 500k on me. I make enough just goofing off that i isn't worth my time to wander from vendor to vendor, so I goofing to the AH if I need lowbie gear for a new job, and pay the "convenience tax. "

You, as a lowbie, are probably better off getting what you can off a vendor. Do watch the prices though, about level 18 or so this is no longer economical as the AH becomes cheaper. AND if you can scrounge up starter gil, buy more gear at low price from the vendor, and put it up on the auction house make up to make money off lazy players like me.

I made a pretty penny flipping low level gear like that. The key is to avoid flooding the AH so you don't crash your own market.
