I can't stand the initial starting grind on a new job, when using high delay weapons. Especially Monk using Hand-to-Hand weapons... when you are speed killing mobs with no rest (let's say in Gusta atop Vomp Hill, doing complete circles of destruction), waiting for the endless msgs to stop from engaging another enemy too soon, it just kills the flow.

I have a couple issues with parts of the advice given to the OP, even though it's very well meaning advice, your hearts are in the right place. But telling someone they shouldn't play THF, when he is talking about deleting his char completely and having 'wasted time', is not really explaining it very clearly. Almost every player on Nasomi has THF lvl'd to either 15 or 37, and many have it at 75. Someone should have mentioned that it's not a waste to invest in ANY of the jobs, they all potentially can add value to things you can accomplish in game, and unlike other MMOs you can lvl each and every one of them to 75.

Think about how cruddy that would feel, if after he talked about deleting his char, and then got advice to lvl Monk... weeks go by and he's learning much more about ffxi, and discovers he will want THF at 15 minimum for TH1, and he actually lost progress on his char by deleting the one he had already invested lvls into THF with.

Also the advice about not targeting specific mobs. You are absolutely correct about just chaining EPs and not trying to take EM or Tough, but should he be focusing EPs like Walking Saplings Lizards and Rarabs, or is it wiser to focus Bees Crawlers Birds etc.

You all are very helpful, but it was a bit of an overload for a clearly brand-new-to-ffxi player. I would have simply asked him which Nation he chose to start in, and told him simple basics like ditch the Onion Dagger and use Sword, always get Signet, shoot for 12 stacks of all drops and sell at AH, and perhaps some specific advice depending on his city like: Bastok start on Bees and Worms, when it all goes Too Weak jump up Vomp or Zegham Hill and mow Bees Worms eventually Gobs then if your lvl gets high enough maybe even Sheep. Windy start Bees and Mandies near town, eventually move up to the Tower where Sopipi spawns, and non-stop mow Birds Crawlers Gobs even Rarabs if you are killing too fast. San'D has tips and tricks as well, altho I admit I am Bastok for life so slightly unfamiliar with that city's zones, I think it's like Bat and Rabbits to obtain quest items that sell well to AH, maybe Funguars for Dark Crystals.

I just started Nasomi mere weeks ago, and had zero problems starting lvls on THF, equipped only with the knowledge of using a Sword and knowing both which mobs are easy to chain kill and ALSO make you money (think Beehive Chips and Silk Thread). I hope the OP will still come back and read this thread, feel free to scream in-game anytime on my char Knarl if I can help you with lower lvl things.
