It's in the game manual, can view it on the old SE website for ffxi to refresh the muscle memory a bit if u need to

Thanks Carrot.

Kinda sad that no one really knew the answer to this. This is something that should DEFINITELY be posted somewhere visible, considering that it defaults to compact. No one in game seems to have any clue, and continues to use WASD to move. I know the original client, at least from 2004-2008, didn't default to compact, as I never had this issue before.
