True, but if he is having traffic go through some devices either way, there's still ways to look at the original source address. And if they were innocent and are willing to provide a MAC, that could be handled perhaps. But I get what you're saying as it changes from one route to the other as a new destination address comes into play.

Why are you avoiding the scraping data portion of his comment? Like for real. When I was in TS even I thought it was odd as fuck that there was a "Crafting Corner" page that required a separate login to get into aside from logging into the forums itself. Low and behold it did hold all of the scraped information behind it, and had nothing to actually do with crafting. If you don't think your friends in TS were using that, you're out of your mind. Not impossible, but so highly unlikely as to be impossible in practice. The only way to determine the source address is to talk to the VPN service. They are the only ones who know, and it is their job to protect the privacy of their users. Short of a government order, they will not do this. Even they would only be able to provide a source IP (after a fair amount of log searching themselves) and wouldn't be able to determine who is cheating and who isn't if they're not sniffing and logging FFXI traffic, which they are obviously not. MACs do not apply here in any way, they are layer 2. Only the layer 3 IP address applies, and as we've discussed cannot be used to determine who is who without private VPN company and/or government intervention.
