the beginning of the game is about becoming acquainted with being out in the field. try out the different jobs, grind them up a few levels so you can fight tougher things. Redmage is probably the easiest to start because its a good combination of damage and healing and utility.

youll become very familiar with /heal. its your main method of regaining hp and mp in the field. the game is very slow because of this.

but of course, as you level, youll need to make a little money to upgrade your gear and spells. talk to npcs around town. theyll have a number of different quests for gil that usually require killings monsters in the field until they drop items.

What city did you start in? and what levels have you gotten to so far?

It's not like modern MMOs. It's much slower and less intuitive. For example, you have to sit and do nothing to heal. Quests and Missions don't go into detail on how to accomplish them. Even finding a quest starter NPC can be a challenge at times. If you like to craft then you'll have to figure out what's appropriate to craft for your craft level and materials you can obtain. FFXI wiki is your only chance. If you keep playing you will eventually get the hang of things when you get to level 12 and start to party with others in the Valkurm Dunes.

I'd suggest joining a linkshell (guild), trying to do some quests or missions (http://ffxiclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Quests), and pairing up with someone who will fight monsters with you.

If you post your characters name Id be happy to get you on your feet next time I'm online. It can be really daunting to get started, but once you find your feet it's not so bad.

It a big task to take on, and much easier with friends. Talk to some people in the town your in. Most people are friendly and will help new players. Join a Linkshell as that will be your best source of help.

http://ffxiclopedia.wikia.com/ is a great resource, BUT not 100% accurate. Use it guide you, but don't expect everything to be accurate. Also check the revision history of pages on ffxiclopedia. If the first revision is later than 2007 it is out of era and 90% of the time doesn't work on Nasomi.

If you see me online I'm always willing to answer a few questions, or help new players. /tell Stickywicket. I'm usually on sometime between 6PM, and 3AM EST weekdays.
