So what I've learned from this thread is that before the patch, every RNG was constantly meleeing?
How did you arrive at that conclusion? Every ranger here has more or less had the same complaint: positioning. It has >nothing< to do with melee, TP, or even damage for that matter.
As a ranged class Ranger should be able to stand where it makes the most tactical sense, anywhere between point blank and it's maximum range. Not pinned in this weird ass no man's land of 9 to 14 yalms, where you're either constantly making melee chase the mob (or outside range of the healer), or ground zero for every AoE attack in the game.
Out of all the ranges to make a 'sweet spot' for, SE (and now Nasomi) literally chose the range that makes the least sense. Remove player agency, force them to stand within a shitty distance window, then act like those aren't legitimate complaints when players bring this up. Makes sense.
How about this, let's add this component to Blackmage? They're a ranged job, sweet spots are interesting. They could have a different one for each element! Could be tons of fun watching them shift around trying to find maximum damage for each element!
No? Terrible idea? So what makes it a good one for Ranger? The fact that SE did it, and couldn't swallow their pride and undo it until years later?
